Understand I am not advocating by any means that Butch should be retained even if he wins out. With that said I think the line of thinking within the UT AD is that Butch needs to go. As I said I think they missed a prime opportunity after SCjr loss at home. An interim would have 0 expectations at Bumma from the fan base and could build their role into a series of winnable games with a different approach.
As far as timing goes it depends I think this. We beat Kentucky I fully believe he coaches vs So. Miss. We win that one he will coach the next week. I heard someone else say that "Butch may be the best choice for interim" and I am starting to agree with that. The only game the rest of the season we should not "expect to win" is LSU. I do not see a change if we win out with the exception of LSU till after the season.
As far as Gruden I do not believe at all an offer has been made, agreed to, negotiations taking place or anything near that. I am sure they have reached out to gauge interest and I hope the interest is there but am in no way convinced by anonymous posts and some BS overseas gambling site moving their odds.
Its all about how we are viewed by potential replacements. I know many are "Full Grude" and I am in the "wishing" mode but on the "using my head" mode I am still around 10% chance he comes here to be the HC. Now a strong HC with an upside with Gruden in charge of quality control....I can get on board with that.
I will give you a real life example. When I moved to Knoxville I did so because my son was in my wife's belly and she wanted to be closer to her family. We were living in Memphis and I was running one of the top Auto Dealerships there. This was before Monster and online application so I sent resumes to several companies. Not bragging but I had my choice of jobs. One was financially above the rest by a large margin but they were going to make an opening for me by letting someone else go that was having a bad year after years of strong performance with them. They were not looking to replace him prior to receiving my application. I then interviewed at another company at an entry position, far less financially but I saw an infrastructure I could work within. I took the second job in 2004 and am still here and only answer to the President of the company.
All that to say it is easy for an employer (UT) to run off talented candidates by doing something like letting someone go after a win or after losing a game we are supposed to lose. A lot has happened to make them get to the point of being done with Butch and missed the perfect opportunity post SCjr but not to the point they fire him mid season for losing to LSU in a close game or if we look competitive.
Will Overstreet said yesterday something that stuck with me. The most sure way to get fired is fan apathy. If we win this week and have 60kish at So Miss or if there are more off the field issues that would be bad for Butch win or lose.
