Alright fellas, I'm going to do my best to add some substantive conjecture instead of being a negative nancy. As I see it, the biggest hope for our Grumors right now lies in how Grumaggedon 1.0 actually went down. Here are the two theories behind the 2012 meltdown.
Theory 1: Gruden was on board until the 11th hour, when Cheek and Hart screwed things up.
- Could just be more hogwash to try and salvage the last bit of credibility that the "insiders" to the situation had. At worst, it's just another lie on top of the pile of other lies.
- However, it could also be the real story--and I don't think anything about it is necessarily unbelievable. Cheek has long been rumored to be a thorn in the side of the athletics department, and I don't think anyone was necessarily impressed with Hart's tenure as AD. Remember, Butch was pretty far down on our list of coaches. It kind of makes sense, seeing that Hart failed to attract multiple other top name coaches to UT, that he screwed up Gruden's hiring somehow as well.
- If theory 1 is correct, I'd say our chances of landing Gruden are a VERY real possibility. It makes more sense at this point for Gruden to make a return than it did then. The Athletic Department is in better financial shape. We have a new AD driving things. Boosters are probably more bankrolled than before. Peyton is now more fully in the mix. I mean it makes sense that if we barely failed before, we would close the deal now.
Theory 2: Gruden was never a real possibility. A single phone call was made by the AD, and Gruden turned us down.
- I think this is the "official" story as it came from a few beat writers.
- If this is really how things went down, then all of the things we heard from "inside sources" were just pure bs. Might have been an intentional misrepresentation of facts, or it might have been honest mistakes. Gossip can get out of control. Either way, it basically invalidates any use of "inside sources."
- If theory 2 is correct, then I'd say our chances at landing Grooden are much much slimmer. It means that we aren't really high on the man's list. Maybe he really does want to be an NFL coach again instead of a college coach. Or that he's with ESPN for the long haul. Whatever the case, if he shut us down with a single phone call before, I'm not sure we're going to attract him now.
Anyways, that's my way of simplifying the current Grudescape.
