If he had been coached to spike the ball in that situation, he wouldn't have spent precious seconds looking to the sideline for instructions. And obviously, he ran a play, so he wasn't instructed to spike the ball.

Please help me understand why. Morale is down, coaches are on edge and the players aren’t tense. The only reason I can see waiting is if you are certain of who you want and you are working out details.
