If Currie can get The Man, he will be immortalized as the greatest AD in UT History. Imagine having that honor after only having the job a year.

but then...what happens if The Man ends up a mediocre coach or worse...and [insert mid major up and comer] we passed on goes on to be the next Meyer. or Patterson. We'll look back and crucify Currie for how "stupid" the hire was...despite it being exactly what everyone thinks they want right now...

Of course, he could also be awesome...and lead us into a decade of excellence. The crystal ball is foggy on this one.

At least he got what the people wanted. That is what will make him loved by football fans

I feel like the chances are extremely low that Gruden would be mediocre. He may have years that he did not win the SEC East but we would be comptetitive in every game. True that we could also pass on an up and comer, but I am good with a ‘known”.

That's fair. I don't think he's going to end up being the hire, but if he were, he could very well make us consistently competitive again. At a bare minimum, our QB play should improve.

I don't think we would get curb stomped in our own stadium by a slightly above average Georgia team if Gruden was the coach..

He would attract the players we need to win and, just as importantly, the assistants he needs to win. For this to happen, it would require complete buy-in from the UTAD and the major boosters. I can say this much, if they bring in Gruden you won't be hearing radio commercials hawking single game tickets at Neyland for a looooong time.

Gruden will not fail if he is brought here

What do we consider failing? 8-4 or 9-3 consistently? or 5-7 years? I'm just curious what the expectation would be on a year in year out basis with him at the helm.

Frankly, I'd be happy if he came here, but I'm not sure I have the level of confidence many of you have that he'd be a resounding success across the board. I do think he'd give us a chance to prey on a weak east, which is something we've yet to take advantage of...but I'm not sure a Brohm-type candidate wouldn't be able to do that either.

People that are loyal fans and boosters would say Currie gave it his best shot. Tennessee fans and supporters have been loyal through good and bad times. They certainly aren't going to be mad at Currie for giving it a great shot. And if he pulls off Gruden or a Patterson or Peterson type hire nobody is going to be faulting him. At least not very many. I just want us to persue the best. If Currie and BOT makes a honest run at Gruden that's all I ask. Same goes for the rest of the top candidates. Nothing is ever for certain, but striving for it is the real test. GBO!!!!!

And if they are removing some obstacles that kept it from happening last time, that shows me they are really trying.

SOON!!!!

Just be competitive.. Like the 80's and 90's. You knew if you scheduled Tennessee you had a fight on your hands. You were gonna get physical play, punched in the mouth, and they would never quit.

That's what I miss, having a chance to win in every game..no matter the rankings of either team. And usually if Tennessee was supposed to beat you they did.. and usually no doubt about it.

Have you met our fan base?

Edited to include: We hate everybody

What ABOUT our fan base? Hire low-level coaches that don't/can't win, and you'll get a disgruntled fan base. Happens everywhere.

Hired Kiffin. Kiffin did ok (last time we over-performed, really). Fans were ok...until he left. = Fans were pissed.

Hired Dooley. This was not his level. Dooley sucked = Fans were pissed.

Hired Butch. This was not his level. Butch sucked = Fans were/are pissed.

Hire another low-level coach = get more pissed fans.

Hire Gruden = sunshine and flowers. Rings. Titles. Smiles, and nods. We all get along.

Grude.

Soon.

8-4 or 9-3 every 1 or 2 years at most out of 4, and I prefer it be more like 1 out of 4. And at least 2 years at 10-2 or better out of 4. 8 win seasons should happen maybe 1 out 4, that should be the lowest excepted number. Anything else should be considered not nearly good enough. This is the SEC and if you want to recruit good consistently that is the standard you need to meet. GBO!!!!!

Until the UGA game we have had that the last two/three seasons.

I guess I could be wrong but I read today that was put out maybe 10 hours ago on the chances of Gruden coaching at UT. The answer was no, not going to happen. I know that's not the end all and final but there's nothing pointing to Gruden winding up at UT as the head ball coach. Nice if it happened yes but there's absolutely nothing out there to even indicate that he's interested in this place.

I don’t think there are a number of wins that define success. It’s more of what the product looks like weekly. I would say it looks something like:
- Playing in Atlanta every other year. Winning the SEC at least once in the next 6 years.
- Winning against our rivals with consistency (i.e. never losing to AL, UGA, and UF in the same year)
- Always dominating cupcakes
- Recruiting in the top 5 consistently and not losing top recruits to transfers.
- Finishing seasons in the top 10

The first 2 years were his best. But we should be 3-1 against florida, 4-0 against Candy and SC, and a lot of our cupcake games were way closer than they ever should have been.

Edit - fixed lol
