Official Jon Gruden Thread XVII

Volbrian and JAV just said in regards to Gruden 2012 and 2017:

Volbrian:
Much of the OP is accurate. The exact conversations and ultimatums may not be revealed but it can be said that Dave Hart cost Tennessee a chance at hiring Jon Gruden in 2012. Will it be different this time? I would not put money on Gruden being the next coach at Tennessee but I WOULD put money on Tennessee giving him the best offer possible with everyone, boosters and AD personnel, on the same page. They will make him say no in my opinion and if he does, he is probably not coaching college football.

JAV:
The OP is pretty close. I'll just echo what VolBrian said. There will be an offer made that virtually any coach (not named Saban or Belichik) would not be able to say no to. That said, I'll believe that he will come here when the ink is dry. I do know that there are excellent options that will be pursued if Jon doesn't become a reality.

JAV:
I'm not trying to be evasive or vague at all so please don't take it that way. The 2 names that I know will be seriously pursued, I just don't want to say out of respect for both of them and those who are involved. I will say that both of them would bring their own seismic boom as well. Not Chucky big but both are great football coaches.

I'll give more context if needed

JAV says we won't pursue Kelly. After Gruden and Kelly there are no seismic booms. Maybe Patterson but can't see that. Petrino won't a boom, it will be a 50/50 split of the fanbase. There are no other booms

Let's say Gruden does want to coach Vols. Will ESPN let him out of his contract or does he have to pay them? How does that work?

His contract isn't public, so it would be total speculation what it says about breach on either side. Contracts can have all sorts of interesting provisions.

For example, it was just revealed that Harvey Weinstein's contract had provisions in it that actually prevented his company from firing him for sexual harassment unless he was actually convicted of a crime.

I believe that while the Top Men under consideration may not be universal #1 choices, they would be pretty much universally acknowledged as great hires. We've all seen names other than Gruden or Kelly that we would be thrilled to see coaching on the Hill.

Who?

I think Jim Bob would be big. I’d love to see Tee get a chance but I don’t think he’s ready yet. Scott Frost is killing it but he’s all but a done deal to Nebraska JD they make a move. I’m just baffled. This list we keep hearing about is our national treasure map at the moment. Can’t wait to see it.

I would love to know who they consider to be worthy of the "Top Man" accolade. Les is more of a "Fare to Middlin' Man" in my book.

Here’s what gives me the most confidence about this next hire. Peyton Manning. If he really is behind the scenes working th coaching channels, is there any doubt we will have a great coach? I trust his judgment more than any booster and UT administrator. Have we ever had someone like him helping with a coaching search? Can you think of another school that had a former prominent player that was to the level of Peyton assisting with a coaching search?

If the rumors are true about him calling QD and telling him to stay then you have to think he has something big in the works.

I hope one of those other 2 names outside of Gruden, is Bob Stoops. I basically harass him to say yes. If it's true about them doing a big boy offer like JAV and Brian mention. Then I believe Stoops is possible. I believe we could definitely land a proven winner.

I do not think Stoops is a candidate, for reasons on both sides. With our recent Title IX issues, there are concerns about how he handled the Joe Mixon situation. And Stoops himself is actually burned out on coaching. My guess is that he is done for good.

I been away tonight guys.

Have Peyton and Gruden been spotted having drinks, slapping elbows, and drawing up plays together anywhere?

What's the Grude news?

I heard the that in the event Gruden will not accept an offer the administration will go after Lou Holtz

This. I love knowing that Peyton is quarterbacking this team of people making this hire.

A couple of days ago someone said that the plan was to fire Butch after Bama, then Peyton would be announced as the "Football Ambassador" or some such nonsense, to sure up the recruiting class. I ask you, who is the 18 year old that can say no to Peyton sitting in their living room? Moreover, who is the seismic boom coach that can say no to Peyton. The truth is if you genuinely believe Peyton to be working with you, you believe you can't lose. Everyone says yes to the GOAT.
