What do you feel is the realistic probability Gruden is the next football coach for the University of Tennessee?
I'm at 70% right now. There are too many unknowns right now to say one way or another. To say he is or isn't without it coming out his mouth is purely speculation and opinion. Anyone that says he's 💯 either way doesn't know the sports world, coaching, driven individuals, the power of money, or family. I'm not saying I'm an expert. I just love football and the Vols. We were close in 2012 but the timing wasn't there plus I think JG saw he wouldn't have total control with Haslam/Hamilton/Currie. He had similar issues with McKay and the Glazers in Tampa. I believe there has to be the perfect storm to land the white whale with many variables needing to line up perfectly. Here are my main points.
-Elimination of Haslam control.
-MNF ratings down. No chemistry in booth with Mdonough. ESPN will save 2 billion a year getting out of MNF! cutting payroll (Gruden highest paid)
What will he do for ESPN? Gruden QB camp not for 6.5mil.
-NCAA rules and regulations scare him. He doesn't have a clue. Getting Blackburn here with him is major regarding that issue. Fulmer as AD helps tremendously but rules have changed in 10 years. Blackburn knows them about as good as anyone in the business. He stepped down as AD at UTC in June so he is available but was the Currie hire (David's dream job) the reason why he left? With Haslam out of the picture and JG urging he could be a key piece in his support staff especially with NCAA compliance and student athlete academics. Plus with Fulmer's age he won't do that job forever David could eventually get his dream job in the near future. JG and DB got their starts here and they were here together and they have a strong bond. Doug Dickey was Blackburn's mentor.
-Money/Contract/Buyout/Bounses/Media & Business Endorsements (Currently with Corona UT is a dry school)
-Legend status he's not there yet. Could join JJ, Switzer, and Carroll as only coaches to have SB and NC rings. But he would be the only one to get SB first then a Natty. Does this challenge appeal to him?
This is the biggest factor IMO.
-Cindy and family. Married for 26 years to his UT cheerleader sweetheart who is from here. Anyone that's married to a great supportive woman knows that her support and wishes mean everything. It's been said that she would love to be back here with her aging parents to help take care of them. Son Michael is junior here. Rumor said they were looking for a private home for him here so he could continue his education here. Oldest son Deuce Strength and Conditioning coach with Redskins could join him here. And youngest son Jayson sophomore in high school plays football. JG was raised Catholic. There is an excellent Catholic school here with a pretty good football program.
There are many more tangibles I could list but we will just have to see in the next few days whether he will come lead this program back to where it once was with its proud tradition, most passionate fan base of 100k every week in Neyland on the hallowed field of Shield Watkins.
I believe he is the only coaches that can help bring healing from the damage of the last 10 years.
Sorry so long.
