Official Jon Gruden Thread XLVIII

What do you feel is the realistic probability Gruden is the next football coach for the University of Tennessee?

I'm at 70% right now. There are too many unknowns right now to say one way or another. To say he is or isn't without it coming out his mouth is purely speculation and opinion. Anyone that says he's 💯 either way doesn't know the sports world, coaching, driven individuals, the power of money, or family. I'm not saying I'm an expert. I just love football and the Vols. We were close in 2012 but the timing wasn't there plus I think JG saw he wouldn't have total control with Haslam/Hamilton/Currie. He had similar issues with McKay and the Glazers in Tampa. I believe there has to be the perfect storm to land the white whale with many variables needing to line up perfectly. Here are my main points.

-Elimination of Haslam control.
-MNF ratings down. No chemistry in booth with Mdonough. ESPN will save 2 billion a year getting out of MNF! cutting payroll (Gruden highest paid)
What will he do for ESPN? Gruden QB camp not for 6.5mil.
-NCAA rules and regulations scare him. He doesn't have a clue. Getting Blackburn here with him is major regarding that issue. Fulmer as AD helps tremendously but rules have changed in 10 years. Blackburn knows them about as good as anyone in the business. He stepped down as AD at UTC in June so he is available but was the Currie hire (David's dream job) the reason why he left? With Haslam out of the picture and JG urging he could be a key piece in his support staff especially with NCAA compliance and student athlete academics. Plus with Fulmer's age he won't do that job forever David could eventually get his dream job in the near future. JG and DB got their starts here and they were here together and they have a strong bond. Doug Dickey was Blackburn's mentor.
-Money/Contract/Buyout/Bounses/Media & Business Endorsements (Currently with Corona UT is a dry school)
-Legend status he's not there yet. Could join JJ, Switzer, and Carroll as only coaches to have SB and NC rings. But he would be the only one to get SB first then a Natty. Does this challenge appeal to him?

This is the biggest factor IMO.
-Cindy and family. Married for 26 years to his UT cheerleader sweetheart who is from here. Anyone that's married to a great supportive woman knows that her support and wishes mean everything. It's been said that she would love to be back here with her aging parents to help take care of them. Son Michael is junior here. Rumor said they were looking for a private home for him here so he could continue his education here. Oldest son Deuce Strength and Conditioning coach with Redskins could join him here. And youngest son Jayson sophomore in high school plays football. JG was raised Catholic. There is an excellent Catholic school here with a pretty good football program.

There are many more tangibles I could list but we will just have to see in the next few days whether he will come lead this program back to where it once was with its proud tradition, most passionate fan base of 100k every week in Neyland on the hallowed field of Shield Watkins.
I believe he is the only coaches that can help bring healing from the damage of the last 10 years.
Sorry so long.

Nope, no more signs. Nothing else left except a yes or a no.

I watched a once proud program get torn apart in a single season this year because the AD was too stupid to remove a coach when everyone, and I do mean everyone, knew he needed to be removed. Yet he continued until the pressure was so bad to fire him, he had no other choice.

Only to turn around and completely eff up what should have been a reasonably simple process if we are to believe the rumors. Which turned this once proud program into a laughingstock which in turn made it into the most pitiful program in recent memory. We fans ignored that and committed ourselves to change at the AD level and pushing out the old money. We did our part. Now it's time for them to hold up the end of their bargain.

I don't care if it's Gruden, Miles, Petersen or Tee. Just get us a coach we can be proud of and put some fire back into this program. No more substandard hires, no more up and comers, no more three and outs. They get someone that's honored to wear the Power T and know what it represents or they risk losing a loyal fan base that rose to the occasion.

It. Is. Time.

GV,

Go to the Sports 180 WNML website and listen to the Will West and Brian Rice Podcast. It really outlines the fall of the UT Athletic Dept, from the inside. Lots of talk about egos and people just wanting to look good to the public, at the expesnee UT sports.

Dammit man, just say something!

"Vol Fans: Fulmer, the Grude has his own energy or life force, if you will. His natural environment is on the sidelines, coaching. Why don’t you send him home? His bags are packed. He has his plane ticket. Bring him to the airport. Send him home....send him home.

Fulmer: I’ll send him home. It’s time to go home, Gruden. [woos; promises to pay millions; Gruden doesn’t go to Knoxville] Son of a *****, Grude! Why didn’t you go home?! That’s your home! Are you too good for your home?! Answer me!"

I just heard a private-y soundin jet fly over my house north of the city.

It's him. It's Gruden Clause and his team of flying boosters. He's gonna start in the center of the city, and spread his awesome joy throughout Knoxville. Today! It's Grudemas!

This will be my last post in the Gruden thread. As others have said, it’s been an exciting ride. Hopefully we get the guy. But I’m not feeling it anymore. I’m of the belief that we will welcome home Coach Tee Martin. In recent days, Fulmer has been quoted as saying he will be “very present” in the football program. I also believe Fulmer is working like heck to get the best defensive mind he can find for Tee.

So, good luck all, merry Christmas, and God bless.

I’m out.

I'm pretty much with you as well. Was very optimistic at one time... not thinking it is going to happen now.

Just hoping Fulmer will line us up a good HC and staff to move the program forward and one the fan base can get behind without raising too much hell (knowing it won't make everyone happen regardless who he picks)

I kind of took Gruden's no comment last night on MNF as a bad thing. Also his partner said "if you had just answered the call and said yes you could have saved them an awful lot of trouble" To me that was him saying he got a call but didn't say yes. Anyone else think that is correct?

Every time I feel like Gruden isn't coming, I talk myself back into thinking it's possible. Latest thought.....if it was anyone else, why hasn't he been named? There has been plenty of time to make an announcement. Only answer I can come up with is that we're waiting on something. (I know.... duh) It seems like it is not an assistant or it could have been announced already. So, seems like it has to be a sitting coach or someone with other obligations. 50/50
