Official Jon Gruden Thread XLVII

I think if we go with that thought we'd be underestimating our opponent.

I have no problem believing Jimmy Haslam is vindictive and his family's ties run deep and wide.

i agree, but i did preface what i said with "if the HoH has been sufficiently neutered as the coup suggests ..."

not saying it has, saying if it has.
:hi:

So what's the thought on the Haslams giving a big FU back at VolNation and opposing booster's?? Ya know it's gonna happen, right?

Hopefully the other boosters and UT are ready for the possibility.

BTW, what happened to the talk of venture capital $ and academic side of this takeover by the boosters????

This is one of the most awesomest posts we're likely to see this weekend that doesn't involve the names Fulmer or Gruden.

Semper Fi, brother, from a (lots) older, surely more handsome but undoubtedly much less fit Army old-timer. :salute:

Right back at you motivator!

From OldVol74 on VQ.. interesting post

"Apply a little logic here people.

You have a rabid fan base clamoring for a particular guy to be your head coach. Not just your everyday, garden variety clamoring, but pandemonium clamoring. Desire, that were it not to be followed through on, would likely derail your entire strategy for anyone else you pursue. So, you make the obligatory run at the guy and leak that he said thanks, but no thanks. Maybe you even ask the guy to make a throw away comment on his MNF broadcast.

Rumors are put to rest and you move on to your legitimate target.

Now, here's what happened. A group of very influential boosters and former players worked the back channels. One booster has his name on the training center. Gruden was prepared to accept and was already putting together a staff. Currie, for the same reason as in 2012, to placate another big money booster, torpedoed it because he owed his job and, he felt, his security to the other Big Dog named Haslam.

Now, if you doubt this, and you buy the line that some of the company guys fed, that they met in Tampa and Gruden said no, then ask yourself this question; why was Gruden's exact details not leaked to certain cooperating media members like Schiano and Gundy's details were leaked, down to the dollar.

Why wasn't Mullen's detailed offer leaked?

For the same reason Gruden's numbers were never leaked by the media. There was never an official offer made to either Mullen or Gruden by the university. The only numbers you've heard from the Gruden deal were leaked by insiders.

The CBS leak Sunday Morning was a controlled leak by the boosters working on Gruden.

I'm not making this CBS report up, google it.

In the meantime, doing Jim's bidding, Currie makes an end run around the other boosters and springs Schiano on them. The Schiano leak was made by the other boosters who wanted Gruden. Never could they have imagined the outcry.

Now, if you believe the guy who painted the rock and a handful of vocals down at gate 21 got this thing torpedoed, then you may want to stay up late Christmas Eve and watch the fireplace. This was stopped by very influential people both on the booster side, who were infuriated because they had been backstabbed at the eleventh hour, and by politicians.

Now, would Gruden still accept? Who knows?

But anyone saying that the actions of the last 6 days wouldn't make any candidate step back because of all of the negative national media, then you're not being fair. If Gruden accepted now, he'd be burning every bridge with the media group he works for because they've spent the last 6 days saying what a bunch of losers we are.

Believe what you will. I've been around this program a long time and it’s been my privilege to meet a lot of very influential folks."

Great Post. Basically Gruden would burn a big bridge with ESPN if he comes to Tennessee. I guess he has a huge decision to make if the Boosters come back at him with an offer. What if they gave him a Jimbo contract? Would he refuse??

Years ago on Gridscape, we had a poster who knew Philip well. He kept us somewhat informed about Phil's recruiting. He called Phil "The Great Fisherman" because he reeled in the recruits. Like Phil or not, you have to admit he could identify talent, particularly linemen, linebackers and running backs and he more often than not, got his man. Phil will do well recruiting and getting us the best coach available. The Great Fisherman is on the road again!

I posted last night in the previous Gruden thread about the how we should trust the Big Fisherman to do his work. I recall the old Gridscape days fondly.
I miss my old buddy JumpingJackFlash and his always entertaining and insightful posts.......

Thank you for your service and advice, sir. Lol.

Yes, Tenngirl is someone I’d love to buy a drink some time. I think one of my comments led people to believe I was out. I was in my bathroom the whole time. Woke up a couple hours later to my dog sniffin my face.[/

That is the mark of a good dog. I was hopped up on DayQuil since A) I have the flu, B) my wife is out of town, and (most importantly ) C) I am theoretically in charge of our 4 children (all under 9).

I had a quick concern but realized all wasn’t well. You just have folks who got your back (and the pictures you posted)

Oh my goodness. Bless you. I hope you feel better soon. And your children don’t catch it. 🤞

Great news is Fulmer is in the office this morning reaching out to recruits. Our AD may be the best recruiter we have. Also has reached out to all VFLs and has the pulse of Vol Nation. If he recruits coaches like players, WATCH OUT.

Is there anything that restricts an AD from helping coaches recruit? If not, that would be gold.

Just received this text from a friend who's a successful Nashville entrepreneur and mid-level booster...

"Ergen, Thornton, & Davis, among others, had enough of Haslam's pick for AD botching the coaching hire & embarrassing our/their alma mater. It was becoming a bad reflection on them as businessmen to be portrayed in such a bad light nationally, since they are known to be prominent donors to UT.

They gave Davenport an ultimatum & she called Currie in off the road. He went anyway on a plane owned by one of his KSU donors at his former school, which is why no one could find him or contact him yesterday.

Peyton had aligned himself with the Haslams, & one rumor is that he has been offered a piece of the Browns to run them when they inevitably clean house for the second time at the end of the season. Other rumors abound that the Haslams have promised the Mannings they will help them be able to acquire another NFL franchise or a piece of one.

Leach is really interested in this job, but probably won't get it now. That's a real shame, because he & Kiffin are the two best coaches we could have hired, & Spurrier said so today on Finebaum. They know how to recruit & build a staff & run offenses that deploy their weapons to the utmost on the field.

Just a few hours ago, it was Haslam & Manning aligned on one side, pitted against Ergen, Thornton, & Davis on the other. They contacted Fulmer, who met them at the airport. Haslam & Manning wanted Sigmon named interim AD. The others wanted Fulmer & said they were ending their donations if he wasn't given the job on some basis.

Ergen was giving $35M annually to UT when Fulmer was here as coach & has only given $10M annually since. He told UT he would make up for any shortfall in what the Haslams may withhold.

You can tell that Davenport is in way over her head in this job & was visibly shaken at the press conference. She didn't know how to answer any of the questions.

The reason Currie didn't use a search firm is that he was given a list of 3 coaches to interview by Haslam that Davenport signed off on. In order, they were 1. Gruden, 2. Kelly, & 3. Schiano. Gruden was already signed & ready to come, as some of these other boosters had already gotten his agreement, but Haslam nixed the hire because Gruden wanted total control of the program like Saban has at Bama & Meyer at OSU, & Haslam was determined not to let go of his control of everything.

By the time Currie got to Kelly, he had already been approached by both Florida & UCLA, & had decided to go to one of those places. Currie went to the Bahamas knowing he was going to offer Schiano when he got back home. It was only when the firestorm hit on Sunday that Currie had to go beyond the original Haslam list, which is when we got started getting turned down by so many others. Currie made a last ditch attempt to save his job by going for Leach, but he wasn't authorized by Haslam or Davenport to be contacted.

Now, the rest of this is speculation, but maybe more educated guess than conjecture:

Cutcliffe, now age 63, & Miles, age 64, will be the two top targets now for HC, with Tee Martin as OC brought in under either of them & groomed to be their successor. That's the plan. Might involve Chavis or Steele as DC. Should have a hire within 48 hours.

Not sure where they will go if this plan doesn't fall through. Only thing that bothers me about Fulmer in this search is that there will probably be no "outside the box" thinking & any new blood other than Tee. Also, he went with Currie to interview Doeren in NC & had signed off on his hire, which would have been a disastrous hire, so it was just fortuitous for us that he turned us down."

I don't think he burns a bridge with ESPN. These guys are paid to have opinions and stir up controversy in order to gain viewers. I don't think anyone gives a darn if they turn out to be wrong.

Gruden HC, Steele DC and Martin OC. This would be ideal, because Gruden wouldn't have to do the primary recruiting, since both those guys are so good at it. JG wouldn't stay long anyway -- probably bolt for the NFL, but then you've got 2 great co-ordinators to choose from to move up to HC.

Arya, do you ever hydrate while drinking? I have learned after many hangovers that for every alcoholic drink I have, I will drink a water. Cocktail, water, cocktail, water...

That has made a world of difference. Doesn't mean I won't have a slight headache occasionally, but I feel so much better the next day.

Taking some B12 before bed helps too.

If Gruden comes, good chance he’ll retire here. That is a huge “if” though.

Doesn't sound particularly hopeful.

Thing is he still hasn’t publicly said no & I’m sure they knew beforehand that Haslam might try something at the 11th hour. If he’s heart is set on being he wouldn’t care at this point what media had or will say bc they don’t know the whole truth. If he’s heart ain’t in it he would’ve already made a public statement !!

My buddy works for a large grocery store chain and he swears by it. They sell it at his Harris teeter it’s just a powder you mix in water and he says it wipes away a hangover in no time

Dunno what it is, but the water helps more than anything. Probably some kind of electrolytes - Pedialyte works well. That being said so does hanging a 1000cc bag of lactated ringers on yourself before you go up bed.

Hangover symptoms are mainly dehydration induced.

Remember when he shows up in the movie The Blind Side? The rest of the coaches throw their hands up because they think the game is over before it begins.

I’ve actually been thinking about that exact scene since yesterday.

Imo he comes to Tennessee with a high offer, he could "retire" afterwards. Besides if the rumors are true about job cutting, aren't they telling him the same thing? Eff you?

Hangover symptoms are mainly dehydration induced.

Ethanol has a dehydrating effect by causing increased urine production (diuresis), which could cause thirst, dry mouth, dizziness and may lead to an electrolyte imbalance. Studies suggest that electrolyte changes play only a minor role in the genesis of the alcohol hangover and are caused by dehydration effects

I tried that in my drinking days, but could never drink that much water.
