Official Jon Gruden Thread XLIV

Technically everyone in the AD reports to Currie but it is not quite like a normal reporting structure. The assistant AD’s are fielding calls from from boosters. Account reps are dealing with lower tier donors. Condredge has been getting calls as well. That entire staff has been getting their asses handed to them today. I didn’t say the nuclear option was off the table but you have to be careful it doesn’t become a paper tiger. If every time something doesn’t go our way and we threaten to take our money and go home we look like spoiled children. Playing that card means walking away from years of investment. It is a break the glass type thing and I’m not sure it will be needed for what unfolds next. Last night was a react right now issue that had to be stopped immediately. Removing John then Bev will be much more calculated and maybe even a drawn out process. I know many would love to just reset with the right people tomorrow but it will not be that easy. One thing that separates people in power is they usually have a strong will to win and they know most people don’t have the guts to pursue long term pressure. Bottom line is they know weak willed people quit. That is why I am saying the pressure has to be constant and we have to commit to it long term.

Yea but when you can't go into a public event due to being heckled by everyone, it becomes apparent that it's time to cut your losses and move on.

Its not going to get better. We have LONG memories.

1. Boosters provided Gruden on a platter.
2. Boosters allowed Currie to announce stadium renovations with their contributions helping.
3. Boosters got blindsided. (Thus, “insiders” did as well.) Booster’s called his bluff and pulled funding — and used political allies to get the message across quickly.
4. Boosters got lucky someone has a spine in the AD and — I love this, brilliant — waited until Currie was in the air to leak it so by the time he got to Columbus it had blown up and no damage control could save it.
5. The leak intentionally went to mainstream, national media. It worked.
6. Davenport backing out saying she had nothing to do with it. Looks like Currie sided with Haslam and is going to take the fall.
7. Gruden. Has. Not. Said. No.
8. Gruden’s. Agent. Has. Not. Said. No.
9. Soon.

I so hope you're right. I'm not giving up hope yet. Your point #4 indicates that there is at least one person of loyalty and integrity left in the athletics department. Without that leak, Schiano would be the coach.

This. Currie won't be able to show his face in public around Knoxville. He is enemy #1.

So Currie meeting in Tampa. Signed. MOU. Jets. Assistants. Blackberry Farms. Asheville etc. was all false? All Currie had to do is ask?

I'm sorry. I'm not being crude like a lot here. I just can't wrap my mind around this notion.

The leg work was being done by the boosters.

Mentioned this previously, but this thread has come to mean a lot more than just Jon Gruden for head coach. Or even Jon Gruden fan club. Though both of those are true and desired.

This thread is now about a unique community, one that grew together with interest in Jon Gruden as Tennessee' coach as their starting point. It will continue to be named the Official Jon Gruden thread, probably, in recognition of that shared history.

So the rest of VolNation are just going to have to wrap their heads around its continued presence, I think. :)

Lol...why? He has absolutely nothing to do with UT other than many fans wanted him to be coach.

Stop looking for signs that aren't there.

I'm not looking for signs. But I think it's interesting that he knows everything being said about him, like Golic jr. Stugotz, Sheman, Cowherd, etc, saying Gruden was trolling TENNESSEE, especially with the Rocky top thing with the Seattle guys.

He obviously has heard those same guys saying TENNESSEE fans didn't want Schiano because they thought they were getting Gruden. This chit show is nowhere close to his fault, but come on. He squished the rumors in 2012 straight up. Why not now? His son is at UT, hes been spending more time in Knoxville than in the past.

You dont think he would at least make a short statement to put out the flames? At least because of his son?

I don't know man. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Taking your money away just means that those who continue to make sizeable contributions begin to have more pull (more-so than they already have); the donor pool becomes less watered down, per se. Needless to say, unless the sum of those willing to walk away exceeds the conglomerate of the upper-tiers, there probably won't be much push-back

Well what are you saying just continue to let them have their way with STUPID YES MAN hires and getting mid tier average coaches with stupid asinine contracts. Heck if they don't have the balls to fire Currie and limit Haslams control you can have my seat and I know several more that won't be renewing. I don't expect perfection in anything, but our administration is OUT OF TOUCH, especially the ones pulling the strings. ARROGANT and OUT OF TOUCH. Our main so called booster can't even keep the Browns from crashing and burning but the folks at UT let him rule the roost. ENOUGH of that crap, simply enough and no doubt thousands and thousands fell just like me! If they don't act, they can look at empty seats are ROT in their money and power.

Could you imagine if he's still here first home game next season? They dude will be booed by 100,000+ the second his name is announced.

Someone in knoxville had to have known. The AD was fort knox til that leak, and I really dont think that was supposed to happen. Someone important enough to know about it played Currie hard.

especially when they where told to give up the cell phones. weird as ****

I said earlier....if he were to show at Thompson Boling it would be disastrous.

I wouldn't stop heckling till I got removed from the arena.

Don't know if you all seen 99gators post but here it is .

It was about Delmonico, Raleigh and Serrano.

It was about the tragic end of the Pat Summit era and watching that program slowly be just another SEC team under Holly. A good team for sure, but not what once was.

It was about an athletic program that arguably is currently inferior to Vanderbilt.

It was about finishing 13th overall in the SEC men's all-sports standings for 2016-17. It's about not producing a men's SEC championship team since 2011 men's tennis.

It was about an athletic program that has failed and disappointed time and again. And through it all, people continued to cheer, support, travel, pay and hope.....only to be lied to, let down, and forced to endure.

But, this time would be different. The President of the school changed. The athletic director changed. All of the past failure was well documented. It could not be repeated. It would not be repeated. This time it was going to be different.

And then it wasn't.

And the people, who only have their voices, stood up and said "hell no". As many have pointed out, it united this fan base like nothing else in a decade. Everyone agreed. Everyone had enough. "Hell no". In a matter of a few hours, the push back was so strong that those in power had no choice but to listen.

I know that Tennessee fans are catching hell in some places, but I can only put myself in your shoes and say "I get it".

I do not see a way that Currie gets out of this with his job. I really feel like this backdoor deal with Schiano has woken the sleeping giants up. Let’s look at some facts/opinions:

1. For ANY coach on the Gruden/Saban level, control was going to have to be given to the coach. It’s the way it needs/has to be. Period.
2. Haslam does not want to let this happen. Facts surrounding the 2012 debacle prove this. If Jimmy Hyams will admit it, you know there is merit to it.
3. I firmly believe the major boosters not named Haslam were formulating/formulated a deal with Gruden. What all was offered l, I do not know, nor do I care. All I care is that enough people that can make a difference does care. I believe their intentions were to hand Currie a deal all but signed for him to look like a hero with. In return, he gets the glory for a coach at the top of the list and the funding to renovate Neyland. Davenport got the funding for the academic side. Everyone walks away winners. These people are not dummies, they were close in 2012.
4. Currie was instructed to play along, making a Schiano hire easy. This is largely the same way we ended up with Lyle in 2012.
5. Yesterday, the AD and Haslam got notice that their game would not work so easy this time around.
6. As well funded as Haslam is, I do not think that he is able nor willing to pay for the renovations to Neyland all by himself. If donors start backing out of that deal, it forces the university’s hand. They might have the Trump card here. I hope. A lot.
7. Haslam has a huge man crush on Schiano. He wanted him in Cleveland, but that didn’t happen. He had a place to put Schiano as long as he said he would be a yes man. It is also convenient that Jimmy Sexton represents him. I know he represents a lot of people, but he is all too welcome here.
I hate to be this guy, but I would like for the University, not Currie, make a serious offer to Gruden. Make him say no publicly at this point. If we make a fully backed run at him, we might like what happens.

It had to be this way or the other boosters would have made other moves to intercede before the last second. Currie and Haslam kept the cards close to avoid any interference. We got very lucky someone in the AD bleeds orange to his or her core.
I will definitely raise a glass high to whoever it was. They were keeping a sharp lookout on things. Makes me wonder if there are other decisions the weasel has been making for this individual to be on alert.
