Jon Gruden: No offer to coach Volunteers
The Associated Press

KNOXVILLE — Jon Gruden says he hasn't received an offer to coach the Tennessee Volunteers as part of a deal that includes becoming part owner of the Cleveland Browns.

Memphis TV station WREG reported Gruden was weighing a Tennessee offer that would give him a piece of the Browns, who are owned by Jimmy Haslam — brother of Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam. Their father, Jim, played on Tennessee's 1951 national championship team.

Gruden, a former NFL coach and current ESPN analyst, said Wednesday on ESPN's "Mike&Mike In The Morning" show there is "no truth" to the report.

Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis says the report is "completely erroneous." Tennessee didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

Tennessee is looking to replace Derek Dooley, who was fired on Nov. 18.

I completely agree with you that we need someone to motivate our kids... But you have to remember Gruden has never coached kids. He's used to coaching men and even pushing them a little too far at times. I'm not saying he will or won't be successful here IF he's even here, all I'm saying is at the end of the day, these 18 - 21 year olds are still kids and not men. There's a difference in how each should be managed and coached.

Knowing how to manage is one thing but having their respect is another.

It was clear these last 3 seasons that Dooley go ZERO respect from his players. Grden will have that from Day 1 once those kids see that superbowl ring.

Saban is a prime example - I don't think they cherish the relationship - they RESPECT the accomlishments.

Coasty make the merry go round stop! I'm getting dizzy. Thread moving too fast.

Too late Wilson... I had hopes that the Mike and Mike thing would discourage enough people that they leave and go back to the FF and then we get our thread back to where it was 1-6

Just curious, is anyone taking Fuad Reviez seriuosly?

Just curious bc I dont know but does Fuad work with or help our kickers on a for hire basis?

In other words does he offer his services but the kicker has to pay for his help?

I know that there is some kind of crazy rule about how he contributes.

And Tennessee was #9/10 and depending on the year, #9 ahead of Georgia.

Hmm. No Oklahoma

I have a good friend who works in the media side of the athletic department. He has said the whole time that he hasn't heard anything and they have been keeping everything very tight lipped. A little while ago he texted me and said he thinks the Gruden thing is going to happen soon. Probably today or tomorrow. Not saying this is for sure. Just passing along what he told me.

Thanks! Hope it's true, we will see. Either way, thanks.

Groundbreaking.

Gruden could be live on camera on ESPN and say "I am NOT taking a college coaching job" and the Gruden Fluffers on here would swear it's a ploy to set up his hiring as our next head coach. Deny, Deny, Deny. It plays out the same way everyday in the same way by the same guys in the recruiting forum. "He's a UT lock". "Book It". "Wait and see". Kid announces for USC. Umm, something must have happened with his grades. :eek:lol:

Why do you care?

Wow, that is VERY surprising. Can't say I disagree with his list except for Michigan.

I understand that.. I think we have been too soft on these kids.. I mean dont go all Bobby Knight on these kids but hold them accountable.. in high school if I dropped the ball or fumbled.. I was running my arse off in practice.. a coach would tell me.. if I wanted a scholly.. I had to perform to get there.. these kids feel entitled.. by listening to the media.. the attitude is Oh well.. all I have to do is impress at the combine.. that attitude is BS

FW2, we know he has coached his sons HS team for atleast a year. Videos show that he worked with the "kids" pretty well.

I'm sure that age, as well as some time away from the pressures of being a pro HC, have mellowed him a little bit too.

Did I miss something? I didnt see where Gruden denied the job offer or anything to do with Tennessee on mike and mike, just denied that an offer included the Cleveland Browns.

I actually think that was a very positive statement in that he didnt decline anything with possibly HC the vols!

He has had some recent experience with coaching High School players. I realize that being a "volunteer assistant offensive line coach" for his son's team is quite a bit different than being a head coach, but it would've given him a chance to work with younger players. He should at the very least have a frame of reference on the difference between coaching adult pro players and developing younger players.

I will not give up on Gruden until a different coach stands in front of the podium as the new coach. In my opinion, his reaction on M&M was very telling. People are freaking out over it. However, he never denied coaching at UT, only the Browns deal. Gruden baby!
