Official Jon Gruden Thread 50

Gruden thread was fun.
Great people, good discussion, and most importantly it was about hope and love for our great university.
Hope that component never ends.

As for Gruden, I have come to realize he indeed wants to coach again. However I feel he is paralyzed by his fear of not living up to his hype and messing up his pretty persona.

For respect of Tennessee, he should have shut down the rumors earlier to allow us more time recruiting and to further prevent the media smear campaign.
Another argument however is that the hope derived from believing in him, in a return of UT to greatness, may very well be the fuel needed to empower the vol fans to revolt against mediocrity and narcissist booster control.

Pruitt is a solid hire. Tennessee will persevere.
It’s been a pleasure here, GO VOLS!

In the end what happened with Gruden is really pretty simple He never could convince himself that he wanted to coach college football Tennessee is the only college job he would ever even entertain
At the end of the day he decided that if he was going to coach again it would be in the NFL At some point I expect him to to make this known and frankly to publicly support coach fulmer coach Pruitt and the incoming staff and team.

Who gives a #### what Gruden thinks?

He doesn't owe anybody anything because it wasn't his fault; he can't control what adults do and what wild delusions they run away with.

Indeed not, but like all other coaches do in coaching searches, he could have shut them down at any point. He also clearly baited the fans at times. Enough of this. Time to focus forward. Mend, heal, and win!

I hoped for JG or a “splash hire” like everyone else. It’s obvious JG never was coming to UT, sure he might’ve been asked, sure he might’ve thought about it for a minute, but I doubt he ever gave it serious consideration. Everyone has an opinion, so here’s mine, Fulmer had 6 days to find us a coach, a good coach, and he did. Was Pruitt the best available? Probably not, was he the best available to UT? Maybe so. Brohm, Patterson, Peterson, Gruden, Mullen, Gundy, Sumlin, Doeren all turned down an offer, and who knows how many others we don’t know about. Sure we did a good thing as fans coming together and stopping the Schiano hire and getting rid of Currie, but ESPN and most of the rest of the media made this into a toxic job. With all of the other job openings, I think Phil did a good job of still getting us a solid coach. Get behind him or don’t, that’s up to you. I’ll say this, I never want to hear “grumors” again. Go Vols forever.

And it's the fans fault for falling for it. We already went through this in 2012, so "fool me once...".

Also, a hearty ROFL at you "he could have shut it down".....have you been paying attention? "Smokescreen", "he didn't say [insert exact phrase demanded]", etc. This place has over analyzed every effin thing dude said and always spinned it to what they wanted it to mean. How many times was Saban denying he was coaching Alabama brought up in this thread?

TomAto/ tomato

Looking forward to the presser this afternoon

Really enjoyed the Gruden threads and reading the entertaining back and forth discussions. I guess it's fitting that the announcement of Pruitt will be on Pearl Harbor Day. I'll be in wait and see mode for the next few months and into the fall to see how the team performs.

It's not like we have another choice. I heard the same comments with Kiffen, Dooley, and Jones.

I'll always be UT at my core, but I'm now a fan from a distance. Go Jackets.

Yeah, I just don't get how Pruitt is such a hot commodity. Who were we competing with to get him, lol?

BVS is rampant and we're in "Thank you, sir, may I have another" mindset after the last 10 yrs

This whole series of threads has been nothing short of incredible. Thanks to everyone who stuck it out to keep the conversation alive. Definitely the best time I’ve had on VN since joining in 2011. Go Vols!!

We’ll crank it up again in 3-5 yrs. Underwhelming. Hire is underwhelming.

Oh well. It was a fun ride. Thanks to everyone who brought what info. they had.

Anyone wants to bash me...go ahead. I agree with everything MIT said. I love our program this a better hire than Currie would have given, but he's a ****ing bammer.

Then...

GTFO

Morning knuck,

What a ride. Disappointing overall for sure but my biggest thing is Butch is gone!
