Official Jon Gruden Thread 36

I've been riding this thing from the beginning and have invested MANY hours like most of you to this search.

I know for a fact that Gruden was contacting people to join his staff. With his wife's love for UT, his love for UT, & his son attending school here I just can not see a scenario where he or his family pull over the ultimate troll on this fan base. Just yesterday he asked during his interview that the TN job not be brought up AND THEN on his own he trumps how great Rocky Top is. At this point he is making himself look like a fool if he doesn't take the job.

If he turns us down, then shame on him. He and the NFL will then deserve each other.

One, it's not true. Most of the nation (real people, not media types) barely know that Tennessee's looking for a coach. They see and hear none of this.

Two, you're far too concerned about what others think of you. Forget seeing through their eyes, and you'll be able to see more clearly through your own.

We're doing fine, just in the quiet period. The announcement will come, in the proper time.

This aligns with a book I just read. The subtle art of not giving a ****, by Mark Manson.

Great book.

Jmo, but until we get a public statement from Gruden or Currie telling us that Gruden said no, I'm all in. I get that JAV is usually pretty solid, but his info does not line up. Just a couple days ago, he was saying it was a done deal and Gruden was ours.

So which of these best describes you, in stressful situations?

How do you react when first confronted with stressful news? Do you fall apart?

And how do you cope over time? As the stressful situation continues for hours...days...weeks...do you get better or worse dealing with it?

The right half of the graph is particularly applicable as we continue through the "quiet period" of this coaching search.

So which of these do you think fits YOU best?

"Gruden is a poker player. Period. Until he’s at the podium he’s getting an angle on something. He’s so freaking smart.
But who am I talking to ... the kid who fell in the fudge river on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."

My fellow Vol fan and friend here in Clemson country sent this to me in a text message. Reasonable. But I'm all in. 100% until it's over.

You have my attention sir.....2 posts in 7 years!

"If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam."

I'm pushing my chips to the middle of the table. 100% Gruden.

If you don't believe, move on to another thread.

Figured I’d post now since it’s not as fast as it can be sometimes- are there any boards on here for Vols in different cities to connect?

Just moved to Austin TX a year ago and have had some trouble finding a permanent job(have done a bit of temp work since I've been here). Have good experience and am a hard worker.

Would love it if some Vols in ATX could maybe point me in the right direction.

What say you guys?

Also, I’m 100% on Gruden.

Been lurking, observing and posting mildly in the Gruden threads since the beginning and I have learned a couple of things about VolNation:

1.) We are very hesitant to accept any good news. Good news bearer information is taken with a grain of salt. With that we investigate, push and pry for validity to the point where we push some away and make some hesitant to bring any info to the table. Those who believe though bring a great high to VolNation and some jump on board therefore you see some short fun peaks during the day.

2.) We are not hesitant to accept any bad news. Bad news bearer information is almost taken as gospel with no effort to investigate or pry for validity. This news can come from anyone and the masses jump in on the "it is what is boys we just lost". Several jump in and therefore you see long stinted valleys throughout the day.

3.) GIF time is good time. The best time I have had in my entire time on VolNation came during the extended GIF period in previous threads. If you need a smile on your face go to the teens and early 20s in the Gruden threads. I about died laughing. Through all of the GIF training sessions I have yet to learn how to post one myself so we may have to schedule another training session here soon.

4.) We have some extremely consistent "insiders" who have been nuts on most of the way. If you have followed closely you know who they are. They have predicted things, stuck to their guns and things have panned out as they told/predicted. The leak on the booster meeting with Gruden on Wednesday from all accounts was spot on and this was leaked by multiple individuals here on Tuesday evening. The negative media that is coming out today was predicted several days ago along with being reiterated by several yesterday. If you prefer to be a logical thinker don't jump on the negative bandwagon just yet. Eventhough JAV has posted it (I personally believe that JAV is a very connected individual) JAV is also getting his info from the AD which if what the other guys are saying is true is going to be spreading the negative news.

With the players and VFL tweets over the last couple of days I believe UT has gotten "their guy". Is that guy Gruden? We will find out SOON....... Have fun til then.

Have you ever heard of a permanent coach being announced during the season? I personally cannot think of that happening.

Urban Meyer to OSU?

ETA.... hired November 28. Regular season probably over.

Until Currie or Gruden release a statement that he will not be the Coach of the Vols, there is hope. I think it’s important to know either way this weekend. Longer this Gruden thing goes on, I fear we will end up with another pile of crap. Soon! Go Vols!

Ever been at the pool with your kids enjoying a great summer day and then all of a sudden some kid drops a turd and everyone goes running? That’s what these posters are bringing. Good lord. Bunch a turd droppin’ Pearl clutchers.

part of me says, "oh well, it's over."

part of me, strangely, say, "beave said currie would come out looking like a hero."

gruden "saying no" and then currie introducing him at the presser would certainly 1) buy time and 2) make currie look like the here.

i dunno what to think.

:thud:

Take Currie at his own words. He said to believe nothing until he announced the head coach.

A few things.

JAV's comment is concerning, no doubt. He's been solid for years, though I don't know what his line of connection is. It would be unwise to see those as completely irrelevant.

From day 1, what I have heard, and said on this board, is that it's all about timing. In Currie's mind, he had a plan for how the remainder of the season was going to play out. He began working on this plan after the UGA game. The original plan was to let the season play out, and remove Butch and hire Gruden in short order. That plan got thrown off by how abysmal this season became. Remember, after the UGA game this team was still 3-2, so a bowl game was an expectation that many had. The worse the season got, the more the timeline got shaky. After the South Carolina and Kentucky losses, pressure became very intense to do something. At that point, Currie's plan was to remove Butch after the 7th loss. Giving up 50 at Mizzou was the final straw.

But Gruden also has a timeline. And it's not just about MNF and ESPN. There are other factors, like his coaching staff. He doesn't want to be announced as coach and then have to figure out his staff. It's about having the right guys, but it's also about having them from day 1 so they can hit the ground running with as much momentum as possible. So now, Currie is left in a tricky situation. Something has to give. Optimism and positive leaks reached a frenzy on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Thursday morning, it reached a fever pitch when Gruden goes on about Rocky Top on the radio. So what does Currie do in that situation? IF you knew you couldn't announce it yet, you have to begin to push a negative narrative.

Remember from his press conference, Currie said not to believe anything unless they heard it DIRECTLY from him. He said this because he knew he was going to have to buy some time, and that he was potentially going to have to push a negative agenda to calm the masses. But this way, he has deniability because we never heard it from his mouth.

At this point, you're left with 2 choices. Do you believe the sources saying the deal is dead? Or do you believe it's about timing? Do you believe Gruden trolled us with the Rocky Top line? Or do you believe he meant that genuinely?

We will find out very soon if it's a smokescreen. Currie will be flying to do interviews if he didn't get Gruden and as we've seen...you can't hide planes.

Smart man.

More than likely they will never make a comment publicly until someone is hired but even then I would doubt it. It would be very odd for an AD to discuss publicly who has turned the job down. That would be like telling your soon to be wife at the ceremony that she was really your 5th choice.
