Official Jon Gruden Thread 36

A few things.

JAV's comment is concerning, no doubt. He's been solid for years, though I don't know what his line of connection is. It would be unwise to see those as completely irrelevant.

From day 1, what I have heard, and said on this board, is that it's all about timing. In Currie's mind, he had a plan for how the remainder of the season was going to play out. He began working on this plan after the UGA game. The original plan was to let the season play out, and remove Butch and hire Gruden in short order. That plan got thrown off by how abysmal this season became. Remember, after the UGA game this team was still 3-2, so a bowl game was an expectation that many had. The worse the season got, the more the timeline got shaky. After the South Carolina and Kentucky losses, pressure became very intense to do something. At that point, Currie's plan was to remove Butch after the 7th loss. Giving up 50 at Mizzou was the final straw.

But Gruden also has a timeline. And it's not just about MNF and ESPN. There are other factors, like his coaching staff. He doesn't want to be announced as coach and then have to figure out his staff. It's about having the right guys, but it's also about having them from day 1 so they can hit the ground running with as much momentum as possible. So now, Currie is left in a tricky situation. Something has to give. Optimism and positive leaks reached a frenzy on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Thursday morning, it reached a fever pitch when Gruden goes on about Rocky Top on the radio. So what does Currie do in that situation? IF you knew you couldn't announce it yet, you have to begin to push a negative narrative.

Remember from his press conference, Currie said not to believe anything unless they heard it DIRECTLY from him. He said this because he knew he was going to have to buy some time, and that he was potentially going to have to push a negative agenda to calm the masses. But this way, he has deniability because we never heard it from his mouth.

At this point, you're left with 2 choices. Do you believe the sources saying the deal is dead? Or do you believe it's about timing? Do you believe Gruden trolled us with the Rocky Top line? Or do you believe he meant that genuinely?
What do you believe? SOON! GRUDEN TO THE HILL!

Folks, it's time to move on to the next candidate.

You can't fault a guy if he just doesn't want to coach in the college ranks.

We gave it our best shot.

Nobody is making you stay here. If you need me to link you the threads for other candidates I will gladly do so.

LOL @ the administration failed. There's plenty of evidence that they went hard after Gruden. You can't force him to sign at gunpoint for he doesn't want the job. If he said no I guarantee it was to a very good offer.

There is no way Gruden is pulling out.
This spin is controlling the release because it was way to forefront way too fast.

Still full Gruden!

Hell he was praising Knoxville and rocky top yesterday on a radio show. He isn’t ducking us over like that.

GRUDEN TO THE HILL !!!!!

Everything you said is very plausible, however if we take Currie's words as the Gospel truth then wouldn't we also have to ignore everything being told by insiders unless they are in fact Currie himself since he nor Gruden has said anything on the matter? We can't by logic say that all the negative chatter is a smokescreen because it isn't coming directly from Currie but by that same token the positive side of the chatter isn't coming from Currie either.

John Currie needs to give a brief official statement on the "State of the Search".

A void of legitimate information will be filled with potentially harmful rumors, speculation, and disinformation.

Currie, do us a solid.

Soon
1. we're openly competing with FL and Ole Miss, to a lesser degree, and behind the scenes with aTm and ARK, so there's nothing good about publicly tipping your hand on where the search is right now.
2. even w/out the competition from the other schools in our conf, you'd lose any leverage you might have with any potential candidates by giving an update on the search.

there's nothing to gain, save the emotional status of our fan base, by giving a "state of the search" update.
Been a while...what have I missed?
Lexvol sighting....nice. glad to see you around brother.
Here is what may likely have happened imho: the boosters, AD, and VFL's circled the wagons came up with an offer that they felt like could not possibly be turned down by a coach who had interest whatsoever in being a head coach hence the quiet confidence by many. They probably did in fact meet and he probably did express some initial interest but that interest may have not been sincere. He ultimately turned down a very lucrative offer at the surprise of many but I think what you are really seeing are those individuals who were around in 08' and 12' that simply believed that this was always about Jon and his ego. That he truly never had any interest in being the head coach at UT. The information about the meetings and salary was probably leaked by VFL's and friends of boosters not anyone close to Currie, or Gruden himself that is why it was contradictory.
agree with all this. i didn't/don't expect anyone not associated with the athletic department to confirm anything, but it's struck me that with all these rumors and reports, the only thing anyone has ever gotten close to saying is what they think the odds or chances are we get Gruden. and no matter how "good" the news was that was being presented, it's always been followed by "might's" and "maybe's". again, i don't really expect more than that, but to your point about simply being excited about the sincerity and effort put in to the offer this time, i think that makes sense.

excited about how serious it was, not so much that there was any real knowledge of something that did in fact happen as a result of the offer.

and while i'm not a fan of hyams at all, i find it interesting that yesterday it was "no offer or pitch was made, no meeting in tampa", and today "he isn't going to be the coach". he's only reporting what he's being told. but so is Ramey/Brice/Wallace. and aside from Blackburn, no one has a source willing to go on record.

so the readers and fans are left to decide what they want to believe, and connect whatever dots they feel best supports what they want to get out of this.

and so this train will keep going, good, bad or indifferent.

as for what currie should do, to be honest, what should be his main concern right now, regardless of where the gruden deal really is? the psyche of the fans, or working on this coaching search? i doubt he's thrilled with the levels Grumors have gotten to, but there's little he can really do about it, short of doing something he knows he shouldn't/can't do right now, as explained in my response above.

so, i expect the grumors to continue full on until......

The train is still on the tracks and the best conductors and engineers in the thread are on board. I’m still riding. Had to review a few posts to reassure myself last night in doing so a few things came to mind.
Many say Gruden likes the attention but I think Currie likes it more. This is his career defining moment he wants all the credit he will deliver a big name hire and Inthink it is Gruden.
Davenport also has an ego and she wants to be the one delivering $$$$ to UT. She knows a solid hire is a must for her legacy as well.
Boosters are not going to fund a $340M project for a mediocre coach.
Can’t forget the demise of ESPN, the desire of Cindy Gruden to return to K town, and Gruden has said he misses coaching. I think his respect for current coaches will slow the announcement.

For these reasons I have to believe SOON.
