Heh, this is amusing.

It would take a responsible journalist approximately 30 seconds to find the phone number for Ms. Davenport's office, pick up the phone, and begin confirming or denying.

They're going to stretch it out longer because they know their audience will balloon the longer it remains a work in progress.

They aren't dumb, these modern media types...not very conscientious, but definitely not dumb.
