Tony Dungy would be better. Better winning percentages too.

No joke. Sign me up. Heck, let's add Cowher, Jimmy Johnson, and let's prop ole Don Shula up too. That's not happening either. Realistically, who would you want? There are 6 active NFL head coaches with 11 years or more (same as Gruden) that have a better % right now.

The whole thing is crazy, you know? Like a huge amount of effort went into this. Why it would take so much, I don’t understand. On Gruden’s part, yes. But why UT would oppose is baffling.

They wouldn't oppose if it was as easy as hiring someone. I believe this required a lot of collateral changes (AA, scheduling, power and reporting structure, etc.)

Not opposed, but maybe required a lot of effort and coordination.

Having Peyton Manning as your quarterback will do that for you. By all accounts, Tony Dungy is a great man, but he’s just a mediocre coach. If he were better than mediocre, Peyton would have a handful of Super Bowl rings on his fingers.

What makes Gruden any different than Harbaugh (SF) or Saban (Miami)? Other than a SB win with personnel he inheirited, there isn't. Harbaugh is struggling. Saban is Saban. You think Gruden, by name alone, is going to perform some miracle at TN? TN??? Don't see it. Saban didn't have the break in coaching that Gruden has had. Gruden doesn't have the market on Xs and Os. That's why he was barely above .500 in the NFL.

Name your coaching pick

It's not even debatable whether Gruden would be a great recruiter. We would have the # 1 or # 2 class immediately. 5 star kids want to play in the NFL...and Gruden is the face of that and will be viewed as their best chance to get there. This isn't even disputable. Gruden would be an epic hire by any standard. It's almost unfair what kind of advantage Gruden would have over every other coach out there.

For that reason alone...it's enough to want him at UT.

Gruden would be a hire of monumental proportions.

Seriously, Dungy would be my pick. He's a young 62 with Manning connection. He could give us 10 years, maybe more. That would be my pick.

Don't understand what you mean by your first question. In my opinion, Harbaugh is better suited for NFL. I know he had success at Stanford, but I think he would have built a powerhouse at San Fran if the owner would have left him alone. Saban sucked at Miami, and he's doing ok on the college level.

Yes, Gruden by name alone will perform some kind of miracle. It's called getting players to come play for you. That is half the battle. Gruden is the only name out there that can even hope to go toe to toe with Saban in talent acquisition. You think Frost or Mullen scares Saban on the recruiting trail?

You know that Dungy was fired for Gruden because he couldn't win a playoff game, or really even score in a playoff game with Tampa. Gruden took the team Dungy went 9-7 with, including a first round blow out loss for the 3rd straight year and won the Super Bowl the next season by the largest winning margins in NFL history.

I get so tired of the dungys players remark. Why didn't dingy win a SB with them then?
Plus Raiders was his old team and let me tell you as a Raiders Fan since I was 6. Its hard to put a good team together with All Davis.
A good coach can coach any player and use his skill set and Gruden is great at that
Edit: why are you in a Gruden only thread.
