Official Jon Gruden thread 32.

Just watched the press conference for the first time tonight, from two angles. The Jon Gruden question garnered quite a smile from John, didn't it? Certainly not the reaction of an AD who thinks Gruden is off the table at all!!!

Wow! I didn’t even know UT was honoring our 1997 SEC Championship team this week! Just goes to show where our program is right now! I would have definitely been there! Unbelievable!

It was there the first time Beav mentioned pocket aces and I went back to it a few times. Haven’t checked super recently so I don’t know when it went down. Not to go super conspiracy theorist....but it was around the time people were playing guessing games in here, if you get my drift.

Is that it? "Master Bluffers"

Ok, that’s odd. I’m still getting an error on the 97 article. I thought it had some value at the time reading it based on beav’s cryptic posts but who knows. But then the horse thing and bankruptcy triggered my memory. I don’t know, I’m spitballing and defer to the leaders of the class.

I originally posted that link, and it worked for weeks. It is odd they would now randomly take it down. I have felt all along he is the kind of guy to be pushing this kind of deal behind the scenes. Bubba + Beav

Hang on a sec...I read an article during the whole Beav thing that was written by Forbes in 97 about thunder Thornton and how he outbid some dude on land that was in bankruptcy. I just went back to reference it and it’s not there anymore (which is really weird), however there is another article that I hadn’t read that sort of rehashes the whole thing. I checked this out during the whole pocket aces thing. Type in Thunder Thornton Forbes into google and the first one that comes up is the one that is now not there and the second one I briefly scanned from 02. Someone smarter than me tell me if I found something or not.

I had read the article your referring to. I thought it was interesting that the other bidder was trying to purchase the property for his daughter that was graduating from MIT. I don't think the Thorntons fit my imaginary narrative because I don't think they aren't in the right industry to be approached about interest in ESPN. The Forbes article did give some insight into how creative people can get when working deals out...specifically in securing funding.

I like that angle, but it has a flaw: the anonymous third party has to have interest in the waters being tested.

In this case, the waters are VolNation.com, which is a microcosm of the wider Volunteer nation.

Can't come up with a reason why Ergen (or any of the Big Boosters) would have much of an interest at all in testing the waters of this community. As a big-$$ guy, he knows what he wants, and is only looking for allies to put pressure on the university's leadership.

VN.com isn't a potent threat to put pressure on the university leadership.

For the life of me, can't come up with a scenario that links the waters of VN.com, the stalking horse of Beav, and any hidden actor. We're simply not an important piece in any equation concerning the coaching search.

Which means we have to be reading it wrong. Beav's not the stalking horse...we're applying the concept wrong, somehow....

The only way I read the Stalking Horse reference is that the boosters were the stalking horse, gaging interest and viability with Gruden. Because they learned that the deal was viable, now the AD (the "anonymous third party") can move forward with the deal.

I literally can't read it another way.

SFD may have something here...

Some of you are getting dangerously close to doxxing again. Be careful putting names out there. Freak has already threatened the ban hammer for anyone trying to dox.

Either way, don’t know how relevant that is to the stalking horse but the post regarding the bankruptcy angle of that term made me think of it. Now I bow out until the smart people tell me I’m high or it means anything.

If you can pull the “master bluffer” article about Thornton in Forbes of 97, it lays the whole deal out and was interesting. But it says not found now for me...but a 02 article “grand Teton cash machine” is about it but doesn’t have near the info of the original. Might be nothing at all but I always thought that article was sorta relevant (master bluffer/pocket aces/ and now stalking horse/bankruptcy.

I was living in Jackson Hole back then, and if I remember correctly he overpaid for the ranch to cover back taxes, but it did not take long for the property value to skyrocket.

I don't understand why you all are hating on Butch Jones so much. He literally brought this program back from the dead. How dare all of you fake VFLs come on here and trash a man that literally poured his heart and soul into a program. And as far as the Gruden stuff, he's not coming. Get over it. Even if he was interested, I'd rather have Derek Dooley back. John Gruden doesn't want to listen to anything that John Curry has to say. Keep sitting there and keep on dreaming. We will end up with someone like Randy sanders. Peckers.

My point was made in my original post. I'm not comparing him. I'm just saying he's barely over 50 percent as a coach. He's no Madden.

Over half of the coaches on that list are barely over .500. Your argument is tired and has been discussed many many many times in length. You don't know what you're talking about and are just flat out wrong. I'm not trying to be rude, but you should just stop.

New drinking game. Everytime Currie says "The University of Tennessee" during a press conference. I'm glad he clarifies that this is the university he's talking about when he's on the podium discussing the football program. He could simply say "We"...but saying "The University of Tennessee" is excellent filler talk and makes him sound a lot more "athletic director-y" and "SEC-y".

Drink up.
