No Jon Gruden. Hell no.
Every time the head coaching vacancy comes up in Knoxville, Jon Gruden's name comes up because you guys get stars in your eyes.
Gruden then floats the idea of leaving to ESPN, using it as a way to get them to give him more money to keep broadcasting. IT'S HAPPENED EVERY SINGLE TIME HIS NAME COMES UP AS A COACHING REPLACEMENT AT TENNESSEE.
Tennessee needs a head coach who recruits well, with a proven winning record and genuinely loves the Big Orange and its fans. Jon Gruden has none of those abilities or capabilities. He ain't even a good NFL commentator.
I'm sick and tired of hearing Jon Gruden's name come up every time there's a vacancy. He needs to stay where he is, and we need to get us a great coach. Gruden is not. Dude... you're not in the running. Your number ain't coming up. I will personally travel the 100 miles to Knoxville myself and lobby AGAINST you if your name comes up, and I hope you are there visiting when I do.
Quit drinking the Gruden Koolaid, Vol fans. It ain't got no sugar in it.
I'd rather have Peyton Manning. Heck, I'd rather have Phil Fulmer back, before Jon Gruden. My mother would be a better choice.... at least, she has the dignity and respect to not use the offer to get more money out of her current employer.

The only way I read the Stalking Horse reference is that the boosters were the stalking horse, gaging interest and viability with Gruden. Because they learned that the deal was viable, now the AD (the "anonymous third party") can move forward with the deal.
I literally can't read it another way.

More like toasted-vols. A lot of people still smell of burnt hair from 2012.

Just digesting that Press Conference and now thinking:
Let's assume we are getting Gruden. He is the voice of the NFL essentially. His departure would be a big change for ESPN. It would affect many factors of the NFL, MNF, views, sponsors, etc... At least short term. If Gruden went to ESPN letting them know, I think they would request Gruden to do so silently while giving them time to have a quick replacement, and probably adamant on the silence.
This goes along with how silent Currie has been.
It also goes with firing Butch 2 weeks before season is over, rather than end of season, or 5 weeks ago.
I'm wondering if Currie has been waiting on Gruden to give them the go ahead. Gruden has been waiting on ESPN. ESPN plans to make make changes between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Also, Currie making the specific comment "if you hear anything else other than coming from me, it's not true" is like he is thinking about HOW they have to announce this publicly and that he is waiting on something. It's common sense that the AD makes the final call and it's all rumors until then. We know that. It's like he's trying to quiet down the rumors until it's official. Out of respect for Gruden and ESPN.
