Official Hawks Thread

If Joe leaves, how much money can the Hawks spend in free agency?

If he leaves without a sign and trade we're kinda screwed. We'd only be 5 mill under the cap. We MUST either resign him or get him to help us out with a sign and trade.

Gonna be a crazy draft tonight.. Ranradvol, are you looking at any prospects with our pick... C or SF???

I think it's gonna be Dominique Jones from USF. But if Soloman Alabi is available, I don't see any way the Hawks pass him up. Dude has a TON of potential and is 7'1. I think Quincy Pondexter from Washington is another guy they could go with.

I think it's 1 of those 3 guys.

We had a chance to get Soloman Alabi, but I like the crawford pick. He can score... probably replace Johnson..

Hawks are shopping a Marvin and Bibby package deal...please god, let this happen. Golden State is supposedly interested.

No, he's not. But if he leaves, the most the Hawks can offer a player is the Mid-Level exception so it's better than getting nothing. I hope it's gonna be a sign and trade.

I agree, they need to sign and trade him. But, they could always see how it plays out then trade him within the next 2 years. If they don't sign him, they're even more screwed.

A sign and trade would be the best thing for the Hawks. A max contract seems a little much for Joe.

The Mavs want Joe bad. There were reports they were goona give up Caron Butler and another player for him.

Joe is obviously worth more than Butler, but it's better than what they can get for the MLE. There are teams out there stupid enough to take his contract on lol.

Now that they've broken the bank for JJ, there's actually a rumor floating out there that their next target is a bulky center and they are talking to . . . Shaq?!? That can't be true can it?

Nathan Begley's take on Atlanta in the Portland Roundball Society blog:

Pick and Scroll: Atlanta Should Listen to Kenny Rogers Edition.

• “You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.” John Hollinger thinks that Atlanta’s resigning of Joe Johnson is a Pyrrhic victory. I agree. I am of the opinion that Atlanta should have either let Johnson walk, or signed and traded him to a team for a few assets and a trade exception, then Atlanta could move forward, building around an athletic front court by picking up some shooters and a better point guard to replace Bibby. As it stands, the Hawks are darkhorse contenders in the East at best and have little to no shot of overcoming whatever powerhouse arises to take the West. Moving forward, the Hawks look to have little financial flexibility, little chance of contending, and little hope for anything other than mediocrity.

This guy needs to make up his mind.

I dont think those are mutually exclusive.

I agree with him. It doesn't look like they're improving and handling business this way further makes it impossible to do so. It's the sort of deal that can strangle a franchise.

If the Hawks can survive the Jon Koncak debacle, they can survive anything.

This doesn't make sense. The Hawks record has improved each of the last 4 seasons. All they have done is add players, so how can they not be improving?

Get Shaq for the MLE and you have an answer for Howard. They are also looking to move Marvin.

They are making tough decisions, but at least they're trying to give this team a legitamate shot at winning the East.

You really think that much of shaq these days? I don't.

Bottom line is that grossly overpaying a player is something that can hold a franchise back for years. I point to the contract my blazers had with raef lafrentz as evidence.
