Ok, If i were Currie, I would make everyone think I'm not going to hire Gruden, and use him as a smokescreen, which seems to be the plan, and then I'd hire Gruden.

It's #1. And even if it wasn't, there's no way UT would purposely use Gruden as a smokescreen. You never want your smokescreen to cause more excitement than your actual hire. That sets you up to do nothing but disappoint.

The only way Gruden is a smokescreen is if Currie has a HUGE name to announce that we did not see coming. At all.

At this point, I think one of two scenarios are at play:

1) Gruden has been signed, sealed, and SOON to be delivered, or

2) Gruden has been used all along as as a major smokescreen, directing attention away from another AWESOME hire that has not been mentioned or has had very little discussions involving his name.

I am all Gruden until it is not, but either way, I believe TENNESSEE will be great again with this hire.

I still think November 27th is the day of reckoning.

I could see this, but the only way #2 works, is if before Currie announces the hire, Gruden would have to come out and say something along the lines that he appreciates Currie for reaching out to him and going so above and beyond to get him to come back to coaching but he doesn't want to leave the good thing he has going.

That's the only way a Gruden smokescreen could work, he'd have to take all the heat off Currie for who ever he hires to not be hated by fans when announced.

That was the point I was trying to get at. Some things just don't add up

i think we've made every effort to get Gruden on board, i really do. it's just a matter of will he or won't he.

either way, i also think there's been plenty of work put on in on other candidates as well, and one way or the other, we're going to get a really good coach. not all may see it that way, and i get that.

but i don't think not getting gruden (or another big name hire) this time is going to be because we didn't put our best foot forward.

and we have next to nothing on actual information (a good thing) so we wait.

Hahaha...

ergo the need for a Gruden train to exist.

I'll try and start one...

Just remember, on January 3, 2007 Saban was the coach of the Dolphins and was adamant that he was not taking the bama job. He was announced as the coach of bama on January 4, 2007

According to Swain's cohost, John Currie has a history of these smokescreens when hiring at Kansas State in football and basketball. Was discussed with a reporter in Kansas City recently. Similar to the baseball hire here.

You are omitting an important part of that process...

Dan Mullen isn't what most teams in the P5 would consider a big time hire. If he was in such high demand, why hasn't another P5 team picked him up yet or the NFL come calling?

That's what's overlooked and ignored in the Mullen threads.

EXACTLY!! And the use of Gruden as a smokescreen would not necessarily be an intentional ploy from the onset, but just never "squashed" the rumors like so many have wondered. In football terms, a little misdirection.

Either way I think Currie gets it right, but it will be on his own timeline and terms...but still think it is Gruden.

Or #3: We went after him hard and he said/says no. That would not be a smokescreen, but just a miss.

Hopefully #1 is the case.

Someone start a juicy Grumor to get this thread moving.

Jon Gruden doesn't like the woo in Rocky Top.

Heard that's the last sticking point to him signing. After UT scores a td and rocky top is playing, when it comes to the part where everyone woos, Gruden wants a big "DON'T WOO" to pop up on the Jumbotron.

Our love for UT football and desire for its greatness are second to none. It's a consensus that we hate the man, but only this man would move the needle more than Gruden - and that man is Nick Saban.

Nick Saban is not coming, but if he did, every member of VolNation can serve me up a hearty buffet of their favorite crow dish.
