What if a caveat of the entire deal was to help get Mullen a raise? If Currie has, and has had his man (Gruden or not), then maybe a certain booster said "Fine, get your guy, but one of these (insert list of Jimmy Sexton's clients) gets an interview and enough talk to get a raise if they are not getting the job." That would make Jimmy Sexton happy which would in turn make Haslam happy I am sure. Just an interesting thought...

Are you implying Sexton and Haslam are lovers? Because in no way would this make sense otherwise...

To each his own. It will be a poor hire if it happens.

The good news is that it looks like MSU may do us a favor.

Leave Gruden out of it. Mullen has a losing SEC record...that alone should disqualify him from consideration this time.

in 2012 Mississippi State had a 7–0 record, and a number 13 ranking, entering a game vs number 1, undefeated Alabama. MSU lost, 38–7, and lost two more, to number 16 Texas A&M and number 9 LSU. MSU defeated Arkansas, and was looking for a fourth straight win over Ole Miss, who was 5–6 going into the game, similar to MSU the year before. The Bulldogs lost, 41–24, and then lost to Northwestern, 34–20, in the Gator Bowl to finish 8–5......

2013 season against number 13 Oklahoma State, losing, 21–3. They defeated Alcorn State, but lost to Auburn, 24–20. (They defeated Troy, Kentucky, and Bowling Green, and lost to LSU, South Carolina, Texas A&M, and Alabama---does this remind you of anyone Butch Jones maybe)to drop to 4–6, traveling to Little Rock, Arkansas, to battle Arkansas. MSU won, 24–17, in overtime, and was 5–6 entering the Ole Miss game.

On December 26, 2016, Mullen made SEC history when he became the first football coach in conference history to win a bowl game and still finish with a losing record on the season; Mississippi State finished the season with a 6–7 mark.[9]

Went to the game Saturday with my buddy in the AD. He confirmed that Gruden was contacted and that it was more of a formality. He said that he heard Currie wanted Gruden to not officially turn down the position, and that Gruden wanted to clear the air tonight on MNF. He said the AD knows that the Bucs are aiming Gruden and there is interest on both sides. That comment that Gruden made that he wanted to respect the coaches was geared towards Dirk Koetter.

Was that the same guy that had told you Gruden was all but done?
Either he trolled you then or he’s trolling you now....

I'm still holding on to my Tuesday after Vandy and mnf theory. Even if Gruden politely shuts it down, I don't think it's over. Currie is gonna be the hero (or the zero).

Now, if this thing drags on into mid December like some have stated, I'll lose hope. It still might be Gruden, but I'll not have hope that it will be.

Time to have a Gruden candle light service ar church

What he has done there is really staggering. I do not have time to look up the stats but comparing his tenure at State vs. the previous years is eye opening. I read it somewhere not on the forum and not on SDS or any other hack sites. Was on ESPN or something. More 8 win seasons than from 1992 till he started or something like that. All from a school that recruits against and plays Alabama, Auburn, LSU and the rest of the West every year.

I understand the lack of excitement when compared to hiring Gruden but the total lack of respect for what he has done at State and what he could bring here is something I have a hard time understanding.

I am not saying he is a "done deal" by any means but in my mind he is one of the top 3 favorites in terms of "attainability and ability" and has the skills necessary to win here.

Good points. The biggest mark against him is related to the length of his tenure at Ms St. It seems more reasonable than not to assume that Mullen has already achieved his potential and that is what makes Mullen a bad hire imo.

To quote a country song "I am here for the Party!" LOL

I am not going to bash anyone, say their beliefs are stupid or use any abbreviations for vulgar slams like some. Just want to join in because, regardless, this is the most entertaining thread in VN history and has passed 2012 and is about to lap it!

Every once is a while I visit other threads and post some with JoeVol and others in the zone..... but this is THE thread of VN to me and the only one I post much at all in

I would not at ALL be surprised to hear something in the next 48 hours putting the Gruden talk to rest and tempering the expectations of the fan base that are convinced he is coming and setting the stage for the actual hire. Some will love it, some will hate it but that is true with any hire. I know of at least one recruits dad who has been told, directly from "Dr. Currie" as he said, a hire will be announced on or before December 10th (probably before) and to not listen to the Gruden talk in the media and that we will be getting a top notch coach that knows how to win in the SEC. (Didn't say the name but sounds a LOT like Dan Mullen)

The AD knows what is going on and hears all the call ins and the fact you cannot hear the word Tennessee mentioned in a broadcast without the mention of Gruden. It has reached a level of belief that has taken on a life of its own. The LAST thing they want is for recruits to be expecting a hire that looks like it is not going to come to fruition.

At this point they know they have to address it as an official hire draws near imo. They cannot announce Mullen (Most likely imo), Patterson (possible but not super likely) or Norvell (vomit, not likely I HOPE) without first tempering fan expectations.

It's laughable that Gruden would turn down the UT job on MNF. Almost as laughable as him parachuting in to AC/DC at halftime during the Vandy game.
