OFFICIAL Gregg Marshall Thread

You are missing the point Ip. Whether or not the petition caused CM to leave is irrelevant at this point. The fact is a petition "can" and will influence whether a potential coaching candidate wants to come here with some of the fan base over-reacted with the petition. Any good coach knows there is going to be good and bad fanatical fans, but if a coach is concerned about his future and the financial welfare of his family, then he will naturally think twice about coming to a place where fans are after his head in the middle of a season.

I think you're wrong. Some coaches would see it as an opportunity to go to a school with a passionate fan base. Lots of schools have problems even getting fans to games. I see the petition as an overwhelmingly positive sign of a passionate fanbase.

Our fans are amazing.

We are always tops in attendance (even at fake games, ie o&w game) because sports is a part of the culture.

To succeed, the next coach simply has to engage the fanbase, recruit well, and make the tourney most years. These are three things CCM didnt do and 36k people called him on it.

As trigger happy as our fans are made out to be, we gave fulmer a ton of time to fix his crap and 80% of our fans were heartbroken that bruce was fired. You cant blame the fans for dooley and ccm sucking and kiffin bolting for his dream job.

Im dumbfounded by the absolutely ridiculous assumptions here.

If my proposal for a client was rejected twice and i stepped up my game to be the choice a third time, im all in!

Don't be dumbfounded, it really isn't that difficult to figure out. Not all think like you. Everyone have their own motivations.

Obviously, you were one of the petitioners. Lol Fulmer was given extra time because he was a home boy. If you are wanting the perfect coach, you are not going to find him/her. Every coach has their own strengths and weaknesses. Coach Martin did a better job with recruiting this past year. If they decide to stay, we will see how they develop.

If that were 100% true, Kentucky would never be able to get a coach either.

I think most guys who get into coaching have the type of personality to assume they're going to win. They're more concerned about support from the AD and school--which helps them secure the best players and install their system--than with what the fans do.

Obviously, you haven't coached much. Fan support is important right along with administration support. Since you mentioned Kentucky, there was talk of Coach Calipari leaving for the pros after he was under fire mid-season. Even the best of coaches are affected by the negativity of fans.

Thats why I see Archie Miller as being a good fit.

Doubtful we even offer him. Hart won't pay 2m or even 1.5.

Said he was about to get Cuonzo, a coach he clearly didn't particularly want around anymore, to $1.8 per year. He needs to get in that $1.8-2.2 range to get a proven winner in here. We start winning again and filling up TBA and that'll be a bargain IMO.

I didn't say they weren't affected. But Kentucky's fans will eat you alive if you take a misstep, and yet there are few coaches who would turn that job down.

But you're right, I haven't coached much. I should probably just pipe down.

That was media talk and Rex Chapman spouting off at the mouth, not from Calipari's camp. He's done nothing to lead one to believe he wouldn't be back. It took Cal 5 min after the game to say this is where he wants to be, it took Cuonzo 2 weeks.

What kind of response is this ? A dog turd ? The level of education here seems to be going downhill over the years which is why I rarely visit anymore. The petition has a lot to do with influencing a coach's decision to stay or go, and furthermore it has a lot to do whether a coach decides to accept a job. Blindness and ignorance seems to be with those who do not have enough sense to treat people including coaches with some dignity and respect. If you have a problem with any coach, at least wait until the end of the season before taking any drastic measures like a petition.

Maybe you can find a nice book club...and get em talking Vols!!!

Or assume you have as much a right as MENSA BOY to state your opinion?

There is a difference in thinking you are going to win and knowing you are going to win. Not many coaches know they are going to win. Kentucky and Florida have coaches who know they are going to win. The rest of the SEC have coaches who think they will win. While Pearl knows he will win, he also knows he will have to cheat to do it.
similar to the coach at UK but does not know how to avoid getting caught.

Third times a charm

Offer Marshall a four year contract at 2.5 million a year. Pay his 800 thousand buyout with California's money apply the other 500 grand to his salary. We get him for 2.375 million a year. Awesome he has never failed at any school he has coached at.

I usually don't respond to smarta$$e$ but I am going to this one time. Your name-calling does very little for your intelligence. I won't waste my time responding to your remarks since you operate on a very primitive level. Mensa Boy

Not here to fight, this is your board folks.

Gregg is a unique person. Money isn't the most important thing to him. That's not to say money isn't important to him. MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin basically pushed Gregg into leaving a job that had been paying him about 150k into a $750k job. Gregg enjoys being the only fish in the pond. Some writer said earlier this year "the next bush he beats around will be the first one". He won't tell ANYONE what they want to hear.

But he's going to go (or stay) where's he happy. And history of fans attacking family (if the Martin rumors are accurate at all) isn't going to excite him, I promise you.

Plus, don't believe everything you read, but he's making $1.8 with a 10 year contract. That's 18 million....GTD. To be honest, I don't think $3 million interests him...but I suppose it COULD be a starting number.

IF Gregg talked to UT twice, you should hope both times were at Winthrop. If one of them was when you hired Martin, I'd say any chance with him is gone. He's not big on being passed over, especially on the cheap. He's made more for 5 years than what you paid Zo this last year. SMH

Remember too, he turned down $2+ to go to NC State, and more than that in initial talks at UCLA. If you think the UT job is more attractive than those 2, feel free to open your wallets, but it would surprise me.

Good luck to your program. Our series was good for both teams. It would be nice to continue at some point.
