I liked football in the rain as well, but got to play a few games in the snow, now that was a lot of fun to. Yeah the 70s and 80s were a great time to grow up in east Tennessee. Going back to motorbike talk, early on a neighbor had a RM50 and the another had Honda 80 and 125, both were street/trail. Lot of fun, but my parents were not about to get me one, I was dangerous enough on my go-cart and BMX bike.Without question the most fun games I ever played in football were in the rain. THE most fun was an early September downpour where the whole field was covered in 3 or 4 inches of rain. The refs would spot the ball and have to hold in down with his foot until they broke huddle and the center came to put a hand on it. It rained from before the game started til after it was over and we had a blast. Never heard so much laughing during a game of school ball again.
I dont miss the way our pads, helmets, and locker room smelled after that game though. Good grief it was horrible. For a week or 3.
We played baseball in the neighborhood with a loaded whiffle bat (full of dirt) and taped up whiffle balls. Had a lot fun playing that too. I am glad I grew up in a time when "be home when the streetlights come on" was all the parental supervision we had on weekends and summers. Riding everywhere on BMX bikes, building forts in the woods, and just running free until dark. Good times in the 80s.
