Revisit on this. So it’s finally over and everything works. It was an asswhipping just as I expected it to be. Download this, reset that, reprogram this, reconfigure that, rescan this, yadda yadda yadda. Only hiccup was on the tire pressure monitoring system. At one point you reset TPMS and have to relearn the sensors. We didn’t have the handheld relearn tool. Quick trip to NTB on the way home and took care of that. Everything works again on my 13 year old truck… for now.Modern electronics overstuffed vehicles suck. My freaking truck has 15 control modules in it and it’s a 2012. The wife’s 2021 RX350 has 50. 50!
So the Body Control Module (read that as the computer that every damn switch or light in the damn truck touches, including antitheft) has a nuisance fault that disables all interior lighting. Until the last week I’d just clear the fault and the lights come back. This time there were two codes. The usual one and another one that basically says “Ok mf’er we will not let you just clear the fault again you’re gonna fix it this time”.
So this module is the one that also has PATS and the smart key storage. You can’t just change it, you have to use Ford IDS software to transfer the current module load into the new one and reprogram the keys.
It takes me 5 damn minutes to change the damn module but I can’t reprogram it. So I’ve got to get a repair shop that has Ford IDS. The one down the street wanted $2400 to do the job. $342 if that was diagnose (I’ve already done that you MF’ers…) and $1600 for the module.
I bought the OEM module online for $600 and found a lock smith an hour away with Ford IDS capability to transfer the data. They get $350 for 20 minutes work which is mostly waiting on the damn laptop. But… I have to have this capability and it’s better that $2400. So the new module is being delivered today, I’ve already prepped the truck for a pit stop computer swap out after they grab the data, and I’ve got a noon appt tomorrow to do the swap. All for about $1k. All because an overzealous damn nuisance fault.
I hate modern car electronics![]()
Would you consider buying your truck (you don't own any truck in this hypothetical) with no electronics...except minimal systems (maybe engine and / or transmission)? Hand crank windows. Toggle switches. Vaccum hoses for climate control.Revisit on this. So it’s finally over and everything works. It was an asswhipping just as I expected it to be. I’d want my truck without the backup nanny system and I can live without the memory stuff.Would you consider buying your truck (you don't own any truck in this hypothetical) with no electronics...except minimal systems (maybe engine and / or transmission)? If not, what's the minimum electronics you'd prioritize as must have?
Also keep in mind this was the mother computer I changed out. The Body Control Module. It’s in the passenger kick panel and also has the fuse block integrated into it. The alarm and PATS are also integrated into it (this the reconfigure nightmare). Every single other module on the truck hooks to this module via CANBUS. Frankly I was shocked I was able to buy OEM for $600. But I still expected it to be a major PITA to configure. The computer swap was 15 minutes 5 of which was me trying to mate a damn blind screw. Reconfiguring was 2+ hours plus a quick trip to NTB. But I expected it and left my whole afternoon open to deal with it. And I saved a crap ton of money.Would you consider buying your truck (you don't own any truck in this hypothetical) with no electronics...except minimal systems (maybe engine and / or transmission)? I definitely like:I’d want my truck without the backup nanny system and I can live without the memory stuff.
My truck has only one camera on it. A centerline backup camera. I am addicted to that thing as I can hook my boat up by myself in 5 minutes.
Also note that a lot of the stuff is mandated. Antilock brakes and airbag computers are required. As I think TPMS is now too
The current versions have like 10 cameras on them, lane departure nanny, radar cruise, etc…. All great stuff for a passenger sedan but I don’t want any of it on a truck.
I went and test drove new Fords a few months back and once it was over and the salesman moved in for the kill I told him to slow his roll there’s no way I’m buying their damn trucks. They simply have too much crap on them that I do not want on a truck.
Does it at least have padded seats and closing doors?206,000 miles
No power windows
No power locks
No cameras
No payments
That’s something I’ve always been afraid to encounter. Hope everyone is alright.
I definitely like:
backup camera
Tpms
Power window (driver control).
690k on my 99 f350 SRWDoes it at least have padded seats and closing doors?
Mine is 13 years old and 88k miles. For an F-250 that’s barely broken in. All of the BS electronics will die long before the driveline. In the last 12 months I have replaced 3 of the 14 control modules on it. Two were under the factory Ford extended warranty that expired in March of this year.
Holyman… can you imagine coming home to this every night?

must be nice having an EE degree ro be able to work on such.Revisit on this. So it’s finally over and everything works. It was an asswhipping just as I expected it to be. No EE skills required on this because I had to pay someone that had the Ford software to do all that reset and reprogramimg. Just general car guy skills to change out the computer.must be nice having an EE degree ro be able to work on such.
