Official Global Warming thread (merged)

Why are y'all suddenly throwing around ozone depletion as some sort of "gotcha" against science? The ozone issue was not a fake scare. We signed a successful international treaty to phase out CFCs (and now many of their successors). The ozone hole still exists and is recovering.

Just because you personally haven't thought about ozone depletion in 25 years doesn't mean it stopped existing.

I believe it fits pretty well into the fake scare, alarmists propaganda. What about all those predictions from around the time of "an convenient truth". How many of those no polar bear, coastal cities under water have come true?

The problem the environmental whackos are having now is a whole lot more people are clued in to what is going on.

Omg look at this 75 year sea level chart of San Fran Bay. We must stop this sea level rise

I've been gone a day or so. Do people really think the ozone stuff isn't true? Are they unaware of the Montreal Protocol? I'm not sure how someone can be so ignorant and yet so vocal.

you have no idea what you are talking about thus making yourself look idiotic

perhaps that font is big enough to finally get it through your thick head.

It's a freaking disease man.

The Montreal Protocol is absolute proof the ozone scare was real.

isostatic vs eustatic sea level change. Look it up. If you want good BS propaganda material for zippy posts that will get you a bunch of upvotes from fellow ignorant people, try coastal towns in Alaska, like Sitka. Sea level is falling there due to isostatic changes from plate tectonics. Then you'll really show those dumb scientists.

He's talking about "An Inconvenient Truth", polar bears, coastal cities, and water. Are those difficult concepts?

Did you google that? Be honest.

Is real, not was. The hole isn't gone, and it has only been contracting for the last decade or so. This is measurable and observable.

Also, it is chemistry. I'm not sure how one can say it isn't real without going full-blown fantasyland about it. I mean, why don't you think it is real? Do you take measurements in the stratosphere over Antarctica?

Which ozone doomsday scenario actually played out?

Well,

Ozone Hole Over City for First Time - ABC News

NASA - Ozone Depletion a Bigger Deal Down Under

for example. 5 minute sunburns, ozone hole alert days, etc are reality in the higher latitudes of the southern hemisphere.

All because you don't know anything about something doesn't mean it isn't real. I don't know much about car engines, but I don't reject the owner's manual, mechanical advice, or maintenance guidelines.

Isn't NASA that same organization who uses the BS GISS data? You really have a lot of faith in government don't you?

What is chemistry?

That chlorofluorocarbons are a synthetic molecule that accumulate at the poles (particularly the southern pole) due to global circulation patterns, and only break down due to UV rays. As they break down they release a chlorine atom, which reacts with existing ozone to continuously decouple the three-oxygen ozone molecules at a rate greater than UV radiation forms them. It's chemistry that can be duplicated and demonstrated.

So they break down and release a chlorine atom? Isn't chlorine all in the atmosphere naturally anyway?

Are the 5 minute sunburns and higher skin cancer rates part of the conspiracy too? You can visit these places you know. They're real places.
