Official Global Warming thread (merged)

When all this ice melts and the ocean levels rise, will Florida be gone? What about Cuba?

Will Fukushima be completely under water? Will the radiation then leak out, killing all aquatic life?

Bump

I need to know where to buy real estate. I'm looking to buy future ocean front property.

Thanks

www.nytimes.com/2014/05/13/science/earth/collapse-of-parts-of-west-antarctica-ice-sheet-has-begun-scientists-say.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=1

"The basic problem is that much of the West Antarctic ice sheet sits below sea level in a kind of bowl-shaped depression the earth. As Dr. Mercer outlined in 1978, once the part of the ice sheet sitting on the rim of the bowl melts and the ice retreats into deeper water, it becomes unstable and highly vulnerable to further melting.

Richard B. Alley, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University who was not involved in the new research but has studied the polar ice sheets for decades, said he found the new papers compelling. Though he has long feared the possibility of ice-sheet collapse, when he learned of the new findings, “it shook me a little bit,” Dr. Alley said.

He added that while a large rise of the sea may now be inevitable from West Antarctica, continued release of greenhouse gases will almost certainly make the situation worse. The heat-trapping gases could destabilize other parts of Antarctica as well as the Greenland ice sheet, causing enough sea-level rise that many of the world’s coastal cities would eventually have to be abandoned."

hmmm interesting

The loss of the entire western Antarctica ice sheet could eventually cause up to 4 metres (13ft) of sea-level rise, devastating low-lying and coastal areas around the world. But the researchers said that even though such a rise could not be stopped, it is still several centuries off, and potentially up to 1,000 years away.
Western Antarctic ice sheet collapse has already begun, scientists warn | Environment | The Guardian

the ice surrounding Antarctica reached its annual winter maximum—and set a record for a new high. Sea ice extended over 19.44 million square kilometers (7.51 million square miles) in 2012, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). The previous record of 19.39 million kilometers (7.49 million square miles) was set in 2006.

And the debate rages on...

Global Warming will be mocked, ridiculed & dismissed for as long as possible. Then, when it can no longer be avoided, ignored & denied, the "powers that be" will simply say that the scientific community didn't provide them with enough "evidence" of Global Warming's existence. And if they had been afforded this evidence, then they clearly would have done something about it.

Here is what's being mocked: man kinds impact. Nobody truly knows how much impact man has on the climate. Nor does anyone know how or even if we can fix the climate. If the planet would have totally stopped putting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere 50 years ago, would the climate be any different? We don't know. We are a planet driven by fossil fuels and will be for the foreseeable future. I highly doubt we humans can do anything to change the climate.

Serious question? Depends on when you want it to be oceanfront… I hear Okeechobee is nice.
Sea Level has been rising for 18,000 years. Its going to continue rising until the next glacial.
Wrong. It's only been rising the last 40 years or so due to man. That's what I'm told to believe anyway.
Wrong. Sea level was stable for thousands of years until the industrial revolution. Check your facts before you go shaqtin a fool.

Wrong on every point. There’s spectroscopic proof that increasing GHGs are heating the planet. There’s isotopic proof that the increase in CO2 is from the combustion of fossil fuels. Ipso facto, mankind is changing the climate.

Remind me, which president put conservationism on the national agenda? Who created the EPA? Which party came up with cap-and-trade?
No guesses? These weren’t rhetorical questions. Answer key:

1. Theodore Roosevelt (Republican)
2. Richard Nixon (Republican)
3. The Republican party!

Ronald Reagan used cap-and-trade to reduce lead poisoning and ozone depletion. George Bush used it to fight acid rain. George W. Bush also included cap-and-trade in his “Clear Skies” bill that would have amended the Clean Air Act. Upon the bill’s introduction he noted the success of his father’s cap-and-trade program:

The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments have significantly reduced air pollution, especially through the innovative “cap-and trade” acid rain control program. [It] has been a resounding success, cutting annual sulfur dioxide emissions in the first phase by 50 percent below allowed levels. Emissions were reduced faster than required, and at far less cost. The program only requires a handful of EPA employees to operate.

Even as recently as 2008 republican candidates like McCain & Palin, Gingrich, Huckabee, and others supported cap-and-trade. But sure, let’s give all the credit to Al Gore…

Unfortunately today’s absurdly partisan climate makes supporting anything “the enemy” is for political suicide.

Actually not very much impact at all. The Earth's climate is dominated by natural causes. We are currently in the Holocene interglacial and when the next glacial starts and the Earth's temperature starts dropping several degrees we're going to have a whole lot of ice to deal with.

It's amazing how this radical leftist non-citizen is spending so much effort to "educate" the American public. He is one of John Cook's fanatical foot soldiers who's also not a US citizen. They've ****ed up their countries and now want to do the same to ours.

I think it's funny that Bart doesn't think the sea level has been rising for the past 18000 years like you said. I have always argued exactly how much humans have actually effected the climate. I know we have had an effect but to think human beings can vastly effect something as complex as the climate is just dumb.

The leftists are almost apoplectic in controlling every phase of our lives. It is not about right or wrong but achieving their objectives. The coming collapse that their beliefs have engineered will be monumental.

One thing you guys have to understand is that we'll see a full court press from Bart and his like-minded minions right now because their model is falling apart. They are going to get desperate.

May 14th, 60 degrees and raining in Nashville. Forecast is for lows in the 40s the next few days so using the pool or getting out on the lake is out is out of the question.

Dam Global Warming!

I'm glad to see it move somewhere else for a couple days. 75 on the course this coming Saturday.

Dear Bart, please tell thw scientist who are adamant about the reliability of computer models, to take a break from AGWBS and do something useful.....Which team will win the Superbowl this coming season?

They missed it by a year. It will be in the 80s in New York (or New Jersey) next February.

Seahawks, duh.

You raise a point though; many climate scientists could make a lot more money in the private sector. They’re obviously not in it for the money.

Are you for real? I am an American citizen, asshat.

Instead of responding to my specific examples of how environmentalism is not exclusively leftist, you come back with the same blatantly partisan generalizations and stereotypes that I’ve called out time and time again. This is exactly how the far right is polluting the climate discussion. Can you refute my point that cap-and-trade was a (successful) GOP idea, NOT invented by Al Gore?

And the “coming collapse” comment is comical. The science grows stronger with every successive year of observations. Just like tobacco in the 90's, the climate denialosphere has grown loudest as it's become apparent that the science is overwhelming certain and regulation inevitable. The powers that be are just squeezing every last dime out of the industry before it goes the way of the dinosaurs.

Yeah money means nothing to them :eek:lol:. And we can reverse climate change too. Hey maybe if the whole planet stopped using fossil fuels tomorrow, everything might be ok by the time the next ice age appears. Because we all know the sun has nothing to do with the climate, its all us human's fault.

Hey look it's this talking point for the billionth time.
The “climate has changed before” argument is a non sequitur.

That's even worse- then why are you and your cohorts trying to dismantle this country with your silly ideas? You need to get your head out of your ass and work on some real science. Marxism has never worked. What's GOP got to do with it? All kinds of statists reside in the GOP. All three branches of government are dominated by statists.

And, I wasn't just referring to the collapse of your silly notions about AGW but also the economic collapse caused by all the statists' silly ideas that have led to our monumental debt and weak free market. Why don't you come up with some ideas about how we're going to handle the next ice age?

Naturally their altruism is beyond reproach. In fact, I understand many have take a vow of poverty.

Makes me wonder though. Most innovation is in the private sector. If computers are a finely honed instrument with a predilection for proven and predictable prognostication, why arent they used in gambling on sporting events.
