Official Global Warming thread (merged)

The thing with Bart is he readily admits the sea level has been rising world wide since the last ice age. So, now a carbon tax is going to stop it?

Nothing will stop it if it's cyclical. Which, the history of the Earth shows that it is.

Recurrence intervals can be misleading…

Nuclear war/winter is probably more likely, but rapid climate change from greenhouse gas emissions would be a fitting end too.

I think that humans would survive any of these “extinction” events though

Just how much global warming are humans causing?

This is the scientific consensus from AR5. It doesn’t really matter if we’re contributing 75% or 100% or more of the observed warming. If we keep pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere it’s going to keep getting hotter. Physics is physics. The ice doesn’t care about our petty politics. It just melts

So one person represents the "97% consensus"? :eek:lol::eek:lol:

Come on, Bart. I do expect so much more from you. This was very poorly researched on your part.

The fact that Venetians are fighting the sinking of their city is proof that a 10 foot rise in sea levels wouldn't wipe cities off the map. Nor does it make them inhabitable. You conceded my point in your rebuttal. Very unlike you.
The Venetians are paying billions to prolong an unwinnable fight. It's still sinking.

And ten feet of sea level rise would absolutely wipe Venice and numerous other cities off the map.
Additionally, your quip about Chicago shows absolutely no understanding of the magnitude of the buildings they lifted. Think of the weight of a multiple story building without a steel skeleton. Stone or brick walls increase in thickness as they support more weight above. You should read about what they did in Chicago almost 150 years ago. It's fascinating in a science-engineering way. Right up your alley. By the way, did you know the international airport in Kobe Japan is continually lifted because it sinks a little each year? Cool, huh?

Lastly, why would someone need to lift a modern day skyscraper in NYC? It cannot sink; it is anchored into the granite bedrock. It cannot float away. The plumbing and electrical is already below ground and contends with moisture. The biggest concern (imo) is salt water leeching into the concrete and weakening the integrity of the steel frame.
That's the part of my post you focus on? I was being facetious about lifting skyscrapers. Yes, raising Chicago was an impressive engineering feat for the time. You must get the point though that reinforcing coastlines, bringing in fill, and moving cities uphill is not economically feasible on a grand scale.

Nor is it sustainable, as in Venice. Fighting the rising seas will be futile if we don't also address the underlying issue. Otherwise your newly patched up city is just going to have to pack its bags or whatever again in a couple of decades...

No comment on low-lying countries or Pacific islanders? SOL?

ETA: parts of new Orleans are below sea level already. They do pretty well except for the occasional hurricane. But they're all drunk by the time it hits anyway.
Yeah, Katrina was no big deal…

In the Netherlands we’re known for our dikes and levees. We’ve also experienced their failure with catastrophic consequences. Although we’re leaders in hydrologic engineering, we’re still very concerned about sea level rise. There are limits to our engineering capabilities. It is unwise to throw caution to the wind and bank on being rescued by future technology.

I do not believe in conspiracies. I do not believe in conspiracies. I do not believe in conspiracies. I do not believe in conspiracies. I do not believe in conspiracies.
Stephan Lewandowsky, the psychologist who studies (among other things) climate change denial and conspiratorial thinking, is hosting an AMA on reddit. Maybe he can help you

All I can say is thank God if that's the case. We don't have a global warming problem. We have a global cooling problem. The next ice age is going to kill far more life than any warming would.

Bart, I thought you were a kiwi. I didn't know you were Dutch.

Bart likes to trumpet his Dutch heritage because you know how enlightened they are and all-the windmills and the tulips. (Not to mention the prostitution and drugs.)

and amazingly the Regime is trying to tell us this will actually save us money.

That's my biggest beef. No matter how you slice it, prices will go up. That's not necessarily a bad thing. If you make your case that it's worth paying for. But don't try to say that it will save money with a straight face.
