Two words: grenade tags. Become proficient at them and you will pwn online.

Make sure you are clearly under cover. Sometimes you think you're in cover when your head is sticking out and you are an easy target.

Use your pistol at medium to close range
you can knock down your enemy way faster than the rifle and in medium range it's way faster than the shotgun.

Form a close meaningful relationship with your shotgun,

Pick up on similarities between matches (i.e. if somebody
always goes for the torque bow, find a spot where you can kill him as he's picking it up).
Speeding Target
Be extremely patient, always stay with at least 1 other team member at all times, get to know the effectiveness of each weapon and the most opportunistic way to use them.

If you start taking damage, stay where you are (so teammates can help) and get in cover. Don't try to finish the guy off because you think he's deader than you. It doesn't work.

Communication and cover. Always keep in constant communication with your team. It will make it a lot easier when it comes time to take on the enemy. The cover system is your best friend: It allows for blind firing and pretty much keeps you alive. You should almost always use it unless you're hunting your enemy down.

Always pump a few shots into somebody before you cut them in half with the chainsaw, not only does it prolong an already gruesome death, but it gives you a better chance of being successful.

Perfect Reloads are your friend, so use them. They give you a great damage boost and allow you to begin pumping more bullets into their body more quickly.

If you down someone and their teammates are still present nearby, don't try to curbstomp them or chainsaw them, either shoot them or melee them when you're near to them. Curbstomping and chainsawing downed enemies gives a huge advantage to nearby enemies, letting them attack you right after you're done.
Always try to outsmart your opponents by going the last place they'd expect you to go. For example, on the Mansion level, by the lower floor, there are the deck/bar like areas right at the bottom of the stairs. What I would do is sit there until the opponents assume that nobody is there, and when the coast is clear, rush up behind them and put the shotgun to use.

Gears of War is
not a run and gun shooter like
Halo®. Instead of engaging a swarm of enemies, players should
always stick together. Constantly watch your teammate's backs by taking cover in exposed areas. If a teammate is down, the player will be able to heal him/her and finish off the opposing player(s), or vice versa. We should also keep in mind that it is usually better if individual teammates carry distinct weapons. For example, one player can carry alongshot while the other carries a boomshot.

If you're stuck by yourself battling 3 or 4 people, the best thing to do is get out your shotgun and roll around. I was being chased by three Locusts today and managed to kill all of them using some simple rolling tactics. One trick is have them follow you, then quickly press down on the L trigger and A to roll back and then shoot them with the shotgun. Rolling sideways can also make you less difficult to hit and put you in prime position to get the kill. If you find yourself hurt just roll or roadie run away, take cover for a second, then get back into the action.

The pistol is deadly. Give them a couple caps, dive, roll, and then pistol whip. Works wonders.
Active reload is your dearest friend. Practice it
a LOT. Especially with the sniper rifle.

Melee with any weapon is very strong. All weapons but the Hammer of Dawn (Hammer takes 3 hits) will down someone in 2 melee hits, so don't be afraid to use it.

When outnumbered, hide with a weapon you trust like a scared kitten, (like a giant elephant-skinned, armor-clad,razor-toothed kitten with a Lancer, Shotgun, and Grenades), and wait for the unsuspecting dope(s) to wander on up to you and surprise them with a chain-toothed present that lets them know you care

If there is more than one enemy near you then do not use the chainsaw! If they shoot you, your chainsaw messes up and you get killed. USE THE SHOTGUN IF YOU ARE UP CLOSE! The chainsaw is more of a sneak upon the last enemy weapon.
Use the beautiful graphics to your advantage. If you're about to turn a corner, look on the ground for a shadow. It can make a difference between if you're chainsawed or not.

When the match starts don't move at all
just take out your shotgun, but don't move. When an enemy comes and see's you he'll think you aren't inside the game, so he'll get c0cky and go up close to you. When he gets up close: BAM! Shotgun to the face.

Become proficient in all the weapons available in the game, each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Take advantage of this fact and learn to compensate when you don't get the weapon you want. If you learn to adapt to your enemy, he defeats himself.
