Official Erik Ainge apology thread....

You can boil down your post to inconsistency.

You can also boil his career down to inconsistency.
i don't disagree, but in the interest of being fair relative to the discussion that was going on, he sucked yesterday and was great.....all in the same 60 minutes.

and i for one am glad he was great late. he hasn't always done that.

Ainge should be getting nothing but kind words. When Matt Ryan pulled out a win against VT, everyone said it was a Heisman like performance. Well, Ainge just pulled a win out that kept our season meaningful.

I was ditching Ainge too in the 3rd. I am glad he got it together and helped the team pull it out. However, I feel no need to apologize to a QB who turns around and fires a bullet to a running back's back shoulder from two yards away.

Ainge pulled out a win because he played so crappy for the first 3 quarters (the worst being 2 & 3). He wouldn't have to pull out a win if he played halfway decent up until 4.

I'm sorry, but I just don't think he's that good of a QB & yesterday did nothing to change my mind.

He did have an excellent 4th quarter so I will give him props for eaking out the win.....but bottom line, he shouldn't have had to.....

yeah...that was ugly.

You can cut a finger off and count on that one hand how many times he has done that. And even then, you have to give credit to Rogan for the return yards for setting up the short field...

The people that were praising Matt Ryan were just as delusional as the people that want call Ainge a solid QB...

He was hurried and in a panic... that is why Ainge leads the nation in sacks with 2-3. He gets rid of the ball quickly because he feels the pressure way to early in the play.

If I'm not mistaken one of those "sacks" was when a lineman stepped on his foot against Georgia.

Is that counted as a sack? Can I get some confirmation over here?

What amazes me is that people are quick to blame the WR for running bad routes or having the problem with communicating with Ainge, but nobody seems to ask the question that maybe the miscommunication was on Ainge. Maybe there wasn't any miscommunication... maybe Erik just hurried the ball when he felt pressure. There were about 3-4 times I recall yesterday where Ainge threw the ball at a receiver that had his back turned...

Cutcliffe has been interesting to watch this year in his play calling. At times he seems to be at a different game and then can burn the defense with the right call. Our OL is blocking better for the run and we need to control the ball to give us a chance next week against Kentucky. Ainge needs to throw off his front foot and stay balanced and he will be fine. No more laterals please. THAT WAS UGLY and just about cost us the game. Sometimes it pays to go to the locker room.

Cut's calls have always been good--except at the start of a big a game (like the one upcoming with KY, if we win against LSU, and then again in the BCS game) when he has a uncanny ability to go way tooooooooo conservative (e.g. run, run, pass). The other time he falls back into that pattern is when we have a lead. By the time we give up our first few series to run, run, pass against a good team and thus get behind, we have little choice but to pass. This pattern is too predictable. Everyone we play seems to know it... and stop it!

Another related memory I have on this run, run, pass problem is that it predates Coach Cutcliffe in TN football history. Ironically, one of my favorite memories of the CPF era is that his first call as head football coach at TN was to break that long standing pattern with a long TD pass on the first play of a big game.

Please correct my memory if I'm wrong.

One other point while I'm relieving my frustration here...

a short pass that widens the field on first down doesn't help much when what we need to do is lengthen the field. Anyone can widen the field... that's the point of the spread, isn't it?

I don't hate Ainge........I just don't think he's a very good quarterback....seems like a nice enough guy and represents the university well.
