Official Debate I Thread

This format is called a debate? Way to much power wielded by Fox, they can make or break candidates based on their questions. Just another example of the media taking over the election process.

You just laid out why it was done that way. Welcome to politics in general.

I see. So Paul says something on the same stage and you can deposit that money in your account, but one of the other candidates says something on the same stage and you question either their sincerity and/or ability to get it done? Sounds like someone has a bias showing.

I don't know if Rand Paul will keep his promises, but his budget is a much bigger commitment than anybody else is willing to make.

I'd bet the farm Huckabee doesn't cut the dept of ed or the IRS. Not an f-ing chance in hell and everyone here knows it.

Did not watch. Did I miss anything? Did anyone actually answer a question or formulate a coherent response that might resemble answering a question?

So...

Based on what I saw from the reporting (I haven't seen the entire "debate" yet) this is what I have come up with:

Most likely to get my invite to a formal dinner: Ben Carson

Candidate I'd trust with my money: Trump

Candidate of which I'd feel like checking my wallet after they visited my house: Trump

Candidate I'd invite to a backyard BBQ for laughs: Christie

Candidate most likely to mow your yard while you're on vacation: Walker, Kasich and Christie (though I'd have EMS on standby for Christie if it's a push mower)

Most charismatic and likely had the most resonance with average Joe and Jane: Rubio and Carson

Appeared the most confident and "Presidential": Huckabee

Most likely to stick his foot in his mouth at some point: Huckabee

Could cure insomnia: Bush, hands down

Most likely to deck someone during a debate: Christie

Most likely to get decked by Christie during a debate: Paul

Stock rose after last night: Rubio, Cruz, Huckabee and Kasich. Each had a moment of time where they shined and few low points for the crowd. Kasich might have been because he was playing to the hometown crowd.

Mister Congeniality: Carson. Let's face it, he's a natural and set the crowd at ease. Maybe not the best for the job, but he's a guy you can be comfortable around.

Stock remained the same: Bush, Christie, Trump. Pretty much went as expected.

Surprised as they are better than the performance: Paul. I'd say his first outing didn't go as well as it could. He brought good points to the table, but didn't resonate with the crowd. Walker was another surprise. I think he's a viable candidate, but seemed to be overshadowed by the others.

It'll get more interesting as the field clears.

A Kasich-Rubio ticket would be legitimately dangerous. Two guys from swing states - Ohio and Florida - both have pretty good records and have a presidential demeanor about them.

Kasich quote:
"When we get to heaven, Saint Peter is not going to ask us how small the government was."

It's called humor...

Although of the candidates on stage last night Huckabee came off the most comfortable speaking and looking "Presidential." However, that could be because he has been on the TV for a while now. Not my choice (I haven't made a choice yet) but compared to the remainder of the field he appeared the most at ease.

And at the same time, Huckabee is most likely to say something down the road that could sink his whole campaign. Not sure what, but just a feeling I get.

You can cherry-pick quotes all you want but the guy has a great track record of fiscal conservatism and is probably the GOP guy that the Dems are most scared of facing. Like it or not.

You love to pick the underdogs here. If I recall, you are a huge Huntsman fan.

I never thought he could get the nomination though. Kasich is someone that I think has a better chance, at least of maybe securing a VP spot because of his Ohio connections.

The three to gain the most electoral votes in an election are Reagan 525, Roosevelt 523 and Nixon 520. They are the only 3 to receive over 500 electoral votes.

Only Richard Nixon and Franklin Roosevelt appeared on five national ballots.

An example of Kasich's fiscal conservatism was his EXPANSION of Medicaid as governor. After only 18 months, that program is $1.4 Billion in the hole.

In order to call Kasich a fiscal conservative one must be very generous with their definition of Conservative.

Not trying to pick on Huckabee, but he was the one somebody brought up acting like he was serious about the cuts he mentioned off-hand. He didn't even champion cutting the IRS, he just said we could do it if there were a fair tax. That's not a commitment at all. It's a hypothetical. He knows a consumption based tax is a pipe dream. Even Rand Paul knows he can't get rid of income tax.

I really thought Paul would have performed better than he did. I realize it was the first debate, but he needs to step it up big time.

He got really flustered and he didn't get much opportunity. Even when he made great points towards the end they didn't let him speak long. It's hard to come back from gaffes when you don't get to talk.

He shouldn't have lost his cool with Christie (CC has nothing to lose - he's probably supposed to take out RP, lol) and his point against Trump was embarrassing. I think he misheard Trump or something, because Trump was an easy target at that moment.

I would never vote for Paul, but Wallace and Kelly did not give Paul or Cruz much time to speak, and Kelly and Wallace were extra mean to Trump. Lost a lot of respect for Megan Kelly, and I have seen photos of her without war paint on her face.

She was just honest with trump and called him out on his lies and inconsistencies.

And why would you never vote for Paul?

I didn't see Trump as being picked on. He got by far the most time, so I hope he faced some hard questions.

When he was asked about bankruptcy...some people here felt they were picking on him, but to me that's an opportunity for him to defend himself on a topic that is brought up all the time. That probably wasn't news to anybody, but we got to hear his side of it for once.
