Official Coaching Search Thread

Could just be a Rooney Rule, could be legit. He was a well respected player by all accounts and certainly you have to admit the Belichick coaching tree in college is pretty successful when you factor in Saban, Ferentz, and Pat Hill did/are doing plus early tenured NFL coaches like Vrabel, Judge, and Flores. Everyone thinks about Weiss and Crennel and maybe even McDaniels, but those aren't his only coaches. Guy has churned out as many good ones as bad ones. That's not at all to say Mayo should be considered or is ready to be a HC at all, but I don't think the Belichick coaching stigma is universal. I think Belichick's system and style translate well to college, I think the biggest reason it works in the NFL is because guys respect Belichick whereas its hard to implement that type of culture elsewhere when you don't have his resume. Patricia had no respect to back up his tough talk and culture BS, so guys rejected it. I don't think college kids reject it as easily.
Mine and your definition of elite are totally different.
Vrabel- Bill O’Brien he never coached under BB
Judge- way too early 6-10 record, but could be good
Flores- see above, way too early
Ferentz- Hayden Fry would be his mentor
Hill- He jumped around, but, was nowhere close to elite

Saban is really the only elite coach the BB tree has had, and he is a college coach, I had stated NFL. Thats ok, and it’s kinda typical, great coaches don’t necessarily produce other great coaches. This was a token black guy interview. I would bet you 90% couldn’t have told me what Mayo was doing before the Eagles interviewed him. I just don’t see where BB has turned out very many good ones.

We will probably know by Sunday/Monday. Google coach incoming. Hopefully not, just par.

My #1 has been Matt Campbell all along and I'd hope we still at least try to get him. Now with the new AD here is my revised list. This is a combination of people I really want and one's I think we will take a look at.

1. Matt Campbell - anyone who tells you that Matt Campbell couldn't get it done in the SEC is full of crap IMO. He checks all the boxes, passes the eyeball test, his players absolutely love him, and he's done more with less than any coach in recent memory. And there's where some people will come in and say well yeah see he can't recruit. Who can recruit well to Ames, Iowa? I'd definitely give everything I could to get Campbell because if he can win there with a bunch of 2 and 3 star recruits and consistently be one of the top teams in the Big 12 he could be a megastar at Tennessee.

2. Lane Kiffin - he wants to come back and there are a lot of people at this point that would take him back. It would be THE story of CFB heading into the 2021 season if Kiffin "runs it back" and comes back to UT. He's a modern day Steve Spurrier. Kiffin would be wildly entertaining as a head coach that will give all other SEC coaches even more headaches if he's back at UT. I think with Kiffin the fun factor would be off the charts. And it's been a long time since we've had fun here - probably the last time he was here actually.

3. Jamey Chadwell - I believe Chadwell would be a rockstar hire here because I've listened to quite a few interviews with the guy and he knows what he's doing. There would be some disappointment from the fanbase when he's announced but just give the man the mic and let him talk to those people one time and they'd love him instantly. He's everything that people thought Derek Dumbass was going to be except this guy is the genuine article. He has a team that played like a bunch of Junkyard Dogs and they had that chip on their shoulder and played tremendously this season. At a place like Myrtle Beach Poly Tech if you can field a team that looks that good - and a team that looks that well coached - I have a feeling you could do great things at a place like Tennessee. Bring that motto he coached with this past year to UT, "Anytime, Anywhere."

4. Tom Allen - I don't know if he's money motivated or not and I know he grew up in Indiana but there's absolutely no way you can dismiss what he's done at a place like IU. He's a miracle worker in the same ilk as Matt Campbell. Allen is a great motivator, leader, and coach and I would be very happy if that's who we wound up with at the end of the day. People just don't win at Indiana and this year he goes 6-2 with his only losses being a touchdown loss at #3 Ohio State and a 6 point loss in the Outback Bowl to Kiffin's Ole Miss team.

5. Luke Fickell - he's a tremendous coach and knows what it takes to be a successful head coach. I don't think he would bring the excitement but he is a solid coach and well worth the look. He remade a really bad Cincinnati team under Tommy Tuberville into a contender again in pretty short order.

6. Billy Napier - I never thought we had a chance at Napier but I believe with the new people in charge, and Manning being a big part of the search, that Napier could be back on the table. He went 7-7, 11-3, and this year 10-1. He may be waiting on the LSU job but Napier would definitely be worth taking a hard look at due to his track record. To me, Napier and Chadwell are neck-and-neck but I prefer Chadwell simply because I think he would be a better recruiter and I think that's going to be really important for the incoming coach.

7. Lance Leipold - not totally sold on him myself but it's hard to judge him from being at a place like Buffalo. I know from when they joined the MAC in 1999 until he was hired they had exactly 2 winning seasons in 16 years and just in the past four years Leipold's teams have went 6-6, 10-4, 8-5, and 6-1 this year.

Others that would be further down the list:

Tom Herman
Josh Heupel
Jim Bob Cooter
Tony Elliott
Scott Satterfield

I've left off two very popular choices. I don't think with the trouble we are likely in that there's any way the Right Rev Hugh Freeze will get a sniff at the job. Sorry, I just don't see it happening. And anyone that wants to bring up Chadwell's issues they are absolutely not apples to apples. The Chadwell situation was an entire program issue and not directly tied to him. His "violations" are very minor in comparison. I also left off Bob Stoops because for as good of a coach as he was I just think the game may have passed him by. I don't want someone in there to try to fix this mess that isn't HIGHLY motivated. I'm afraid some of the older guys would be there just to draw a paycheck. Stoops may surprise me if picked and want to "prove himself" once again but I personally would steer clear there if you could get anyone in my top 5 or 6 instead. If it fell past Leipold then Stoops would definitely be worth the shot but he's going to demand probably the highest salary of the entire pool as well.

With the rumor of UT plane in SoCal, can’t see we’re there for Chip Kelly. Is there interest in McVay or we feeling him out for protégés?
