Official Coaching Search Thread

Not sure why. Chancellor Plowman said we'd hire an AD first and that AD would be involved in hiring the new coach. She said that CLEARLY.

If you've got a connection, who is the new AD?
dont u think they will have coaches lined up for new AD too pick from? y woudl they wait for an AD to even start conversations?? think please.

Not answering. If you know who is in the coaching line, who has been contacted about the AD job?

The AD position is far more important and going to be filled first. If you're an insider...... you'd know that.

So based on realistic candidates (no Freeze, no Kiffin) that Tennessee can go after, I'd say our board will look something like this..

Tom Herman
Matt Campbell (though I still don't think this one is realistic)
Billy Napier
Jamey Chadwell
Scott Satterfield
Lance Leipold
Luke Fickell

So of those names, who do you think we offer and who do you think takes the job?

He's also a born and bred gump. Born and raised in Alabama. Coached almost his entire career there, including Tuscalloosa County HS. Widely rumored that he's a huge Alabama fan and actively tried to negative recruit his HS players against Auburn. Does anyone really want another gump anywhere near this school?
I knew someone would go there. I don't care where he comes from if he can coach and win games. There have been numerous coaches who have coached against schools they either attended or have ties to. I don't think that would be an issue. Doesn't seem to bother Dabo Swinney.

If the main goal is to win games, then it might be fun to compare the winning history of the potential candidates. As some have said, you're as good as your record says you are.

There are many ways to do this. I have put together a ranking based on wins and winning percentage of most of the candidates (realistic or not) I've seen mentioned. This is an arbitrary methodology - so don't you math guys jump in and say I haven't used proper statistical techniques or regression analysis or whatever. I admit this is very simple and very subjective - had to be this way because I'm a simple-minded guy.

I looked up the head coaching records of the candidates (college only) and did a simple calculation for each candidate by giving double weight to P5 wins (on the assumption that a coach with a proven record of winning at the P5 level is an important factor) and one weight to non-P5 wins. I added those together and multiplied the result by the overall winning percentage for each coach (as an indirect way of including losses in the calculation). I did not include NFL games. I included all college wins, including P5, G5, FCS, NAIA, etc., and I included vacated wins.

Here are the results:

1. Malzahn 97.2
2. Freeze 87.7
3. Doeren 81.0
4. Kiffin 66.7
5. Campbell 65.0
6. Herman 61.1
7. Satterfield 47.7
8. Chadwell 47.6
9. Clark 33.8
10. Fickell 31.1
11. Marrone 25.0
12. O'Brien 24.4
13. Napier 20.1
14. Healy 9.13
15. Steele 3.5

This ranking is obviously skewed towards candidates who have won the most P5 games. A low score doesn't necessarily mean the candidate is not a good coach - it simply shows they have had little success at the P5 level or have had little, if any, P5 experience and thus might fall into the "up-and-coming" category.

This doesn't take into account factors like what shape the programs were in when the coach began at each school (O'brien's time at Penn St, for example, was obviously a difficult job), relative conference strength, etc. It also doesn't take into account any gaps in coaching (that is, it doesn't account for the length of time someone like Steele has not been a head coach). If I had included NFL games, O'brien would move up the list and Marrone and Kiffin would move down.

Here are the actual records for total wins, P5 wins, and winning percentage:

Total Wins:
1. Freeze 87
2. Chadwell 79
3. Doeren 78
4. Malzahn 77
5. Campbell 70
6. Kiffin 66
7. Satterfield 63
8. Herman 54
9. Clark 51
10. Fickell 41
11. Napier 28
12. Marrone 25
13. Healy 22
14. O'Brien 15
15 Steele 9

P5 Wins:
1. Malzahn 68
2. Doeren 55
3. Kiffin 40
4. Freeze 39
5. Campbell 35
6. Herman 32
7. Marrone 25
8. O'Brien 15
9. Satterfield 12
10. Steele 9
11. Fickell 6
12. Chadwell 0
13. Clark 0
14. Healy 0
15. Napier 0

Overall Winning Percentage:
1. Napier 71.8%
2. Herman 71.1%
3. Freeze 69.6%
4. Malzahn 67.0%
5. Clark 66.2%
6. Fickell 66.1%
7. Satterfield 63.6%
8. Kiffin 62.9%
9. O'Brien 62.5%
10. Campbell 61.9%
11. Doeren 60.9%
12. Chadwell 60.3%
13. Marrone 50%
14. Healy 41.5%
15. Steele 19.6%

Interesting that Freeze appears near the top of all these lists. Too bad we probably won't consider him because of the mess that's going on. Sure looks like a good candidate to me if winning is the goal.

I don't claim any significance for this stuff whatsoever. I did this just for grins and thought it might be of some interest to somebody.

Any chance they would offer maybe 7-9 million and try to get Bieniemy to Tennessee?

I know he wants to be an nfl coach......but man if they could just get him in here for a few years.

Who says $ can’t change things.
Not saying it “would” happen.....but is it “possible”?

Who is besties with Manning?

Tell him to get Bieniemy here. Whatever it takes......turn Tennessee around now.

Has he expressed interest in taking a HC job in college?

Just wondering why his name keeps getting brought up. I would think he has eyes on an NFL coaching job

He is; however since he hasn’t landed one......Tennessee should at least offer a boatload and give him his first opportunity as a head coach.

He wouldn’t stay too long; however someone like him could change the fortunes of Tennessee greatly......and open up for better coaches in the future (not saying better than him.....but better than what Tennessee has been landing prior).

I see no way Freeze gets this job. For one thing if UT is trying to get a lesser penalty from the NCAA by doing an internal investigation, then the hiring of Freeze would in the eyes of the NCAA all but undo the so called good intentions by UT.

If he doesn't get one of the two open NFL jobs left, he'd be a great choice. Andy Reid, who would actually be hurt by him moving on, said he's stunned he's not a HC yet. Said he's one of the best leaders of men he's been around and that he's one of the best coaches he's ever had on his staff. Reid said if his son was a player he'd pick Eric to be his coach over anyone in the league. Mahomes credits him greatly with his development as a player and person as well.

MITBEAVER has already said that we are getting the next coach for a “Steele”. Take it for what it’s worth...

After the search firm conducts a national search they will find the ”best” candidate was already on staff. The man of Steele will be our coach for a while.
