Official Ben Howland Thread

I just read the SI article. I don't see what the big deal is... Sounds to me like he lost control of a group of superstars that had been treated like celebrities/NBA players. That, and maybe he had stayed at UCLA too long. The guy has won big. You can't deny that.

UT could do a lot worse. He's not some hack. He's a proven commodity.

If he wants the job interview him. Tennessee would have a hard time hiring someone better than him.

I agree and i think he will come out with a head full of steam to prove everybody wrong...The man is a hell of a coach and we would win a lot of games with him...Him along with Marshall are my top 2 picks...We can probably get him at a decent price too.

If he were to get the job. What would be his recruiting grounds. Does he have ties to certain areas. All I know of him is what everyone keeps saying about him on here.

Atlanta would be his starting ground. Pulled both Tony Parker and Jordan Adams from there his last class. Then up and down the east coast. He got Kyle Anderson to leave the east coast (New Jersey) to come to the west coast.

The NCAA was pounding on the door when UCLA canned Howland. His recruitment of Shabazz Muhammad was about as dirty as it gets. Several big named schools backed out of the race for a 5* potential program changer, because they couldn't justify getting their hands that dirty.

So, if you want a coach that is going to be under NCAA scrutiny for past indiscretions, go ahead with Howland.

Someone sounds scared to me.

U.T. had better be on the up and up, because the NCAA basically told programs not to recruit Muhammad, but Howland saw it as the only way to save his job. UCLA signs Muhammad, wins the PAC 10, loses in the first round of the NCAA tournament, and then UCLA fires Howland before the NCAA catches up with them.

The rumor is that Adidas bought and sold Muhammad to UCLA.

Dude you are in denial. UT is a destination job for football, women's basketball, and baseball. Men's basketball not so much. He's a good coach. If that's the best we can do we should accept and support the guy.

How is it not a destination job in MBB? We're in the top 5 in attendance when we're winning, one of the best practice facilities in the country, and one of the most passionate fanbases anywhere.

Don't know who this guy is but he tweeted this:

UT has reached out to Shaka Smart and former UCLA head coach Ben Howland who took them to 3 Final Fours is "extremely interested"

Howland couldn't recruit his last few years At UCLA, until his last class which had some raised eyebrows with Shabazz. He also is another grind it out, tough type coach.. He lost all his recruiting ties, and connections I'm Cali.. Pass IMO

A few things that I haven't seen this mentioned. Howland offered a high school kid a scholarship, and then pulled it when the kid didn't pan out. The AAU coaches didn't like that, and subsequently, they steered kids to other schools. That's why he tapered off at UCLA. He had to take questionable kids when the AAU coaches turned on him instead of the Kevin Loves and Russell Westbrooks he was pulling early on at UCLA. I doubt if he makes the same mistake twice. This isn't a deal breaker for me.

Second, Howland has no buyout. With the financial state that we're in, why pay a buyout to get a sitting head coach?

Finally, he played an uptempo style while at Northern Arizona and Pitt. He slowed it down at UCLA. I doubt if style of play even matters.

Frankly, Howland is a proven commodity; he'll be smart enough to hire guys to recruit Atlanta and Memphis. The reason the Memphis fans don't want Howland to go to UT is because he gets us the Austin Nichols and Shaq Goodwins out of Memphis. He's been successful at every level, and I have no reason to doubt that he'd be successful at UT. It's a no brainer to me.

Ben Howland should get a job -- but just not sold that Tennessee would be the right fit. Would then depend on his staff.

siap

Any news from Basilio during this search should be taken with a grain of salt. And by grain, I mean like a 1 ton salt lick.

Passionate, yes. Reliable...no.
