Offical Make Fun Of Vandy Thread

As bad as I hate to stoke the fires, I'll have to say that this thread has not lived up to my expectations. The best entries seem to be a picture of Vandy fans poking fun at themselves, a sign making fun of Ohio St, and a couple of photoshops by pj.

C'mon, guys, this can't represent your best efforts.

Here's a theory.

One way to measure a person's character is by noticing what really irritates them. If life's little problems bother you, you may not be able to deal to well with the big problems.

So, if a Vol fan gets in an uproar over Florida or Alabama, that speaks well of them. If, on the other hand, you allow yourself to become irritated by a insignificant outfit like Vandy, it may not speak very well of you.

Vandy = one of those small things you don't sweat.

Henceforth, the lack of effort by VN to make fun of Vandy.

When this is your best football player in school history.....it's not a good thing.

Why are you hanging out on this thread every day? Are you a masochist or something? The answer to your unmet expectations is this. It is hard to hate a team you beat the crap 7 out of every 10 (thats all time its way worse last 20 years) times. And especialy one whose own fans dont give a crap about it.

My presence in this thread is an exercise in curiosity.

I did not think this was the thread for hating Vandy; there is another specifically for that purpose here: http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/86256-why-i-hate-vandy-more-than.html

I thought this was a thread for making fun of Vandy, and with the wealth of material available, I am mildly disappointed in the effort.

To use a famous Lee Corso quote….VN “shot their wads already”…all the good material has been used up on fl, bamer & uga.

And where is your effort? :p Vandy doesn't have football, you just don't find many pictures of them to make fun of. When plenty of people hate a team such as Florida, Bama, USC, Notre Dame, etc. there is plenty to find. Not many people dislike Vandy.

I didn't start the thread, and I'm proud of the name on top of both of my diplomas even if their football program is not strong.

It's just that after a quarter century's worth of ineptitude punctuated by a bowl game in their own neighborhood, I expected something more humorous than lightbulb jokes and puns on the word "commode." VN came up with better punchlines for Ohio, and the Vanderbilt joke should be better.

OK Cotton, here’s a Vanderbilt ‘tale’. And maybe you can tell us a lot more about this than I know.

"Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt amassed a fortune of over $100,000,000 in his life in steamboats and railroads. He also contributed $1,000,000 to the founding of Vanderbilt University - henceforth the team name, Commodores.

According to some history books, he once said something to this effect to some of his associates -

"Law! What do I care about the law? Hain't I got the power? I won't sue you, for the law is too slow. I'll ruin you."

I suppose Cornelius died before college football became popular, or maybe even before it was invented. And I’ve heard that once upon a time, Vandy had a thriving football program. But now - well over a 100 years after Cornelius ‘left the building’ - their football program is in ruins.

Now his name is associated with one of the worse football programs in the country. If he actually made the above threat and then carried it out, could this be a little payback?

Then again, if he was still around, he might use his money to improve Vandy’s football program. Then Vandy could be like Oklahoma - have the best college football team money could buy.

Like they say, Vandy has provided little material to work with. :dunno:

That's a little better; it does show some research. As I understand it, in the age of the robber-baron captain of industry, Cornelius made his fortune by combining a bunch of fragmented east coast freight routes under his umbrella, sometimes using strong-armed tactics. I get the impression that he was a savvy, borderline ruthless, extremely good businessman.

Although it was his endowment that founded what he intended to be a national institution of higher learning in the South, it is said that he never actually set foot on campus. There is, however, a statue of him near Kissam quad on which his hand is in the perfect position and proportion to hold a beer.

Too bad his tactics weren't passed on to the football team.

See? We just slipped a little history lesson in on these kids here.

And back in Cornelius' day, what you earned, you took home = no income tax.
