Considering the situation with our offensive line, why are we not using screens more and using our tight ends. Wouldn`t this help negate the rush some?.

cause our TE are having to stay in to pass protect..MAX PROTECTION for the QB....smh
I agree wish we would use the TE more but O-Line has to get better...
Screens seem to get blowed up faster with the already bad blocking on the line

It seems JP wants the TEs more focused on blocking right now, and for good reason.

I think they should attempt more screens too, but maybe they arent executing it well in practice and, well, you know, the front 7 isnt exactly world beaters.

i wouldn't read too much in to the play calling at this point.

against WVU, what you saw in the 2nd qtr is exactly what they wanted to do from the jump. just couldn't do it consistently.

against ETSU, it was about being physical up front, and gaining confidence in protection, and in hte power run game. they weren't calling plays to do anything other than rep the guys that were in there.

there's been little to no opportunities to judge play calling, mainly because there's been few, if any, situations that would dictate trying to exploit a particular match up or get a defense to do something you want it to do.

that'll change as the season goes on. but i wouldn't read too much in to it this week either. they're still working on personnel groupings, communication, and execution of what they've been practicing.

The play calling has been offensive, for sure.
Helton is not SEC material. In over head.
Don't think we can judge that this year. Not only is this offense new to the entire team but the o-line is struggling. I thought he was able to back WV off the blitz by calling toss plays at the right time. That 17 play drive doesn't happen without some really nice play calling. Only knock I have is the lack of deep attempts against WV allowed them to play up close the entire second half but he called plays good enough to back them off the blitz. We have one more tune-up game and then we get to see what he does against Florida. Either way it goes, I won't form an opinion on if can do until next year. I might get frustrated with the offensive production but without blocking we have a play calling handicap. Really the only time I have said WTF to the play calling was about not passing enough and trying the deep ball some against WV.

Getting Chandler back will help with the screen game!
so will situations that may dicatate running screens, to take advantage of something the defense is showing us.

we've not really been in a situation that says that.

We have been using our TEs, DWA went out on plenty of pass routes last game but the only QB who targeted him was Chryst.

Edit: They have even lined DWA up in the slot, multiple times....

we'll know if that's true in a couple years. 2 games in....it's just a hot take.
For the $$ we’re paying id feel better (even with the struggles) with an already proven OC.
She you see what Darnold did last night you know he was held back.

Yeah Darnold was held back.... 303/480 completions for 4143 yds.... Last year.... Man he was held back so much..... I mean 296 yds per game average..... I mean who would want an offensive coordinator who helped with that......

Edit: I cant even take you seriously anymore.

no, you don't. NFL roster...vs. College roster. NFL coaches vs. College coaches....maybe that has something to do with it too?

it doesn't automatically equal the guy we have sucks.

The Oline has been so bad even screens get blown up, the Oline must improve to even call the most basic plays
Helton is doing the best he can considering what he has to work with, unfortunately.

I have reviewed a lot of the busted plays and looked at the offensive line in particular. What I notice almost exclusively is the problems are coming from a blown assignment, blocking the wrong guy and another guy is just walking by. They don't seem to be getting turn styled in as much as they are making mental errors. Another aspect that makes the O-line look bad is the audible system or lack of audible system. The plays are coming in from the side line . I am not sure if JG has the ability to check out or is just not good at it. He is calling runs right at overloads or blitzes when guys are crowding the line or gap pre-snap. 2 guys cant block 4 guys ….it would be as simple as an audible at the line ( Omaha ) . Some plays the running backs are trying to bounce outside instead of following their blockers. In the end zone the back did that . They changed to back two and ran virtually the same play and the back followed protection. The holes are there , the back just has to hit them. This may be a hold over from Butch. The good news is that these are all things that will come together as the season progresses.

i thought we were gonna make it thru a thread without blaming JG for something. boy was i wrong. Sheesh!

We need to keep getting better in the running game and the downfield passing game. I think our O-Line and backs we get into a better rhythm as the season goes. We need to throw a few more deep throws to JJ and Palmer also. The screen game doesn't work if other facets aren't working, defenses are too fast and close to the line to live by screen passes. I love the screen as much as anybody, but for it to work we need other facets to be clicking also. But I have no problems with the play calling overall, in fact I think it has been pretty darn good. GBO!!!!!!
