Offensive Play Calling!!!

Historically, teams who win championships run the ball effectively. Back in our best years in the 90s, we could line up and run the ball at anyone. Could we use a little more balance? yes. However, give me a choice of a strong running game or winging the ball all over the field, and I will take the strong running game every time.

Alabama is the most predictable team in the country. Predictability isn't an issue when you have better athletes. That's where we're headed. I hope.

I agree with this statement, but we are not there yet, and won't be next year either. So we had better develop what we have and try to construct a scheme that best utilizes the talent we have.

248 yds rushing. I'm glad we hired Debord. I love power running. It wears down defenses.
Perspective. Mizzou's offense stunk worse than ours, so we got more possessions = more run opportunities. But, apart from a few big runs, it was stifled due to really scared, conservative and predictable play-calling. One touchdown in the 1st half, and a handful of 3 pt shots, mostly because we started with great feild position. Just could rarely take advantage of it.

A decent offense would have buried Mizzou in a storm of sh!ite by halftime, and all their fans would've retreated to their happy/safe place.

The only time it really bothered me was in the 4th quarter and we literally just ran ran ran. However part of the reason we didn't push the ball was due to limited numbers and depth. Plus that pass rush of Missouri is good. I'm ok with it over all but we have got to quit being so conservative when we're up I'm not saying press, but at least be smart and do play action and etc to continue to move the ball compared to the 3 rushes into a pile and punt.

So then, why has only 1 out of 11 opponents managed to score more than 21 vs. Missouri. Do all the offenses they face just suck?

I agree. But, we do see the occasional flash of brilliance from Joshua. A QB coach could be a real blessing to him and the team.

Are you suggesting that a certain player with the initials of Peyton Manning might be coming to coach quarterbacks next year.....GO VOLS!!!!!

Take heart, then. This is where CBJ wants to take our program (if given enough time). He wants to model Pinkle's approach of relying heavily on juniors and seniors and redshirt ing many freshman. But do it with better overall athletes.

It's been that way for awhile. Deboard may or may not be a good playcaller, but it's nearly impossible to tell right now.
It's VERY possible to tell. We have stockpile a buttload of WR talent...the kind most teams dream of. And yet we don't bother throwing them the ball. Chitty playcalling any way you look at it...unless you have your head in the sand.

No sir. PM may suck as a QB coach. I don't know.

We need a dedicated QB coach, though.

The problem with that is it's football fan fallacy #1 to believe that an offense can automatically be fixed with playcalls.

I'm just happy that we finally beat mizzou so I won't complain about the play calling it took to get a win. That being said, I think next year if dobbs doesn't improve as a qb then it might be time to have a 2 qb system. Dobbs has had playing time every season he's been here and I just don't see much improvement as a passer and we are gonna need a qb to win the east next year

Try to stay connected to reality, here. Our buttload of WR talent is mostly fighting through injuries all season. And, we don't have a QB who can accurately deliver the ball with consistently good timing.

Iowa, whom we spanked in the Gator Bowl 10 months ago, hung 62 on N. Texas. Portland St. put some stank on em to the tune of 66. W. Kentucky...55pts. MTSU 41pts. WE SCORED FEWER POINTS AGAINST N.Texas THAN ANY OF THEIR OPPONENTS THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's just abysmal. Our 2nd team should have been able to put 41 pts on em!

The Citadel beat S. Carolina today. We came within a froghair's distance of letting SC beat us, just two weeks ago.

Perspective. This offense looks like azz!

Absolutely not!
If we do not improve our passing game and develope a more dynamic offense. We WILL NOT turn the corner and win the sec or even the east next year. We are too predictable.
Yes we beat a talented team, they played extremely flat until the forth.
Happy about the win, but these last two games have definitely not instilled a great deal of confidence.
We may get exposed in a bowl game if we get a decent pick.
You are foolish to think otherwise.... Time will tell.
Would love to be wrong.

I agree with this, but I thought tonight's play calling was fine. There's a reason the OC isn't throwing the ball downfield and over the middle and it's not just because he's conservative. I think he's being conservative because of the reason.... Or reasons. Porous OL? Erratic accuracy from the QB? Combination of both and maybe Wrs being inconsistent as well?
To your point though, if they don't correct these issues they will struggle mightily to win the East. Being one dimensional will cost you big time.

MTSU scored nearly twice as many points as we did, against N. Texas, today. The Citadel beat S. Carolina today. We came within a froghair's distance of letting SC beat us, just two weeks ago.

Perspective. This offense looks like azz....period.

This offense got a win against all those teams you mentioned.

Nice deflection.

The correct answer is Our offense is deficient in some areas for sure, but Missouri has stymied offenses all year and had plenty to do with how we looked.

Still inexcusable!
We are beating only the ones we are supposed to win and in an ugly fashion at that.

Dude, SHUT UP!!! I am so sick of cry-baby ass whiney fake fans like you and the 100's of others on here..
We have lost 3 straight to this team and we beat them..we man-handled them actually.....and this time last year we had to beat Vandy just to get to the toilet bowl.. this year all I keep seeing is crap like this post complaining about not winning good enough... every game is different and a win is a win is a freaking win...stop with the spoiled cry baby fan crap and remember how bad we have sucked for the last 5 years why don't ya..Tennessee football is respected again and all you whiners need to get the hell on and quit calling yourselves VOLs fans..

is killing me! Is anyone else seeing the same thing i am seeing?

And why are we so afraid to pass the ball down the field?

Downfield passes aren't as easy as it looks. You need two factors that we don't excel at: (1) an offensive line that can hold the rush for the 4-5 seconds it takes WR to get downfield; and (2) deep accuracy. I'm sure if we could, we would. But you have to excel at what you can do and not tilt at windmills against your weaknesses.
