Trying to break in a quarterback for the games to come,or the perceptions of whats to come.

The emphases is on the passing game this year and the education of the quarterback.

If it were based on the running game Greer would have or should have started last year.:shades:

In my opinion there performance was awful tonight..No run blocking, no pass blocking, when we rolled out stephens didnt have enough time to throw. If we had blocked anyone on the long pass to g. jones it would have been a td because stephens threw it about 50 yards flat footed. We couldnt get a yard against Northern Illinois 3 or 4 times on 3rd down and then we didn't even give them a chance on 4th down a few times because they couldnt block. We had some stupid false start penalties to start the game as well. I mean if we have guys that can bench 675 or whatever it is why cant they knock a few guys out of the way. I am afraid UGA's d line will tear us apart if we don't get this fixed by next week. Anyways, I think Stephens looked great when given time and he could become a very solid qb. Go Vols way to get a win and beat UGA next saturday :pepper:

they were waaaay overrated to start the season because of last year when they had a QB who took 3 steps back and got rid of it

Problems on the offensive line can't simply be fixed in a week or a month. If it was just an issue of timing or a couple of adjustments, that would be one thing. But we're talking about ability to come off the ball quickly and in a bad mood, to say nothing of the garbage that passes for "technique".

It'll take an entire offseason to fix, and that also means putting a new position coach in charge of that fix.

Offensive line is just pitiful! No wonder we can't run the ball when we can't even push around a defensive line that doesn't even average 270 ibs.......

It makes me mad b/c i can't tell if our O-Line run blocking sucks or Foster sucks.

Our O-Line sucks and our hc started out as a O-Line coach. That's bad.

Fulmer must really be trying to get Foster that record. I'd say that was the deal struck between the two when Foster decided to return for his senior season.

Hardesty didn't even get 3 ypc. Foster was over 4. You play the better back. Especially when you need a back that can block and catch balls out of the backfield.

I agree with that concept Bill, but the fact is, Tennessee rushed the ball poorly last night against NORTHERN ILLINOIS for God's sake. The Vols didn't even sniff 100 yards on the ground. That's just pathetic. We definitely needed some speed at running back last night.

I think we just need a better O-line. If Hardesty is the answer everyone wants him to be, he would have been able to get one measly yard out of 3 straight carries to ice the game at the end. Also with a new QB, having either someone in the backfield that you know will get his block or catch the dump pass is huge. Hardesty isn't the answer for those situations.

part of Hardesty's ypc was a reflection of the last 4 carries at the end of the game when NIU knew we were going to run it up the middle and they had everyone in the box. Foster has a feast or famine mentality if he doesn't break one off he likely gets caught for a loss or small gain.

Me and my girlfriend watched the game from espn zone last nite and she actually pointed out something so plain as day and obvious that i didnt know what to say.
The Mizzou/nebraska game and the usc/oregon game was on in the same room and she said."why does tennnessee have their "line guys" (her term) so jammed up together when these other teams are spaced out?"
She was right. It almost seems like we put ourselves in a hole to begin by shrinking the pocket before the play. Maybe this has been noticed before but i was proud of her anyway...we need new technique and scheme now. The 80s style of football will not wor anymore.

Exactly. I was making the point last night that if you didn't believe the o-line was a problem go look at our 3nd to last drive when we could blow NIU off the line with bigger players in the 4th quarter.

Again, I agree with the concept, but we rushed for what, 70 yards against Northern Illinois? I'm not even talking about Hardesty, I want Creer to be honest. There were a few plays where I noticed that Foster was just slow to the hole or getting chased down from behind. The first play of the game is a huge example. If Creer would've been in there, it might have been a TD. The O-line can't hold that hole open forever, nor should they.

If foster is a great running back then i just don't see it. He is slow, period. Might be great at doing the little things. But a great running back he isn't.

all the more reason to blame the o-line. If an SEC offensive line can't gain one yard in three tries against a MAC team regardless of the situation, there is something seriously wrong with that unit.

I have nothing against Foster, but when things aren't working, they aren't working. Adjustments should be made.

What was the deal with all the stumbling last night? He seemed to either slip or stumble every time he changed direction.

I agree 100% there, that's just pathetic.

Foster benefited from the toss sweeps at the end of the game. To my recollection Hardesty's yards were all between the tackles. What's troubling is why it took the coaches so long to start running the ball outside the tackles when it was apparent that when we lined up in a run formation NIU stacked the box. I also feel that with our current qb situations audibles don't exist and when we line up in a formation we are severely predictable and after 5 games everyone knows what we're going to do in every formation. We need this qb situation stabilized and allow the qb to change a play or two at the line.
