Offensive line issues (merged)

The reasons we are struggling with run blocking are based on how we coach zone blocking and defensive run fits.

To start with, everyone we play (so far) has diagrammed run fits for our RB's. Our flavor of zone blocking (passive) allows defenders to stand in gaps; when our RBs see color in gaps, they don't attack the gap, they bounce out, and this usually puts them into the force of the fit.

With JJ its different. He hasn't been contaminated with our style of passive blocking. He attacks defenders in the gap areas, the RB hits the gap and it works.

I don't blame these kids. They are simply doing what they are coached to do.

Getting Chance Hall back would speak volumes. Does anyone have an update on him?

Yep. Without him they are still bad. VT helped us a lot last night with penalties and Turnovers. Without that we would probably have lost this game. Oline has to get a lot better.

The D did force two of the five turnvoers. We got lucky.

Hate to say it but we are an 8-4 team with the current O-line. Better make some changes and play the better players ( Jack Jones and Bouleware) or we are going to be disappointed come Florida week.

Not to be a Negavol but I tend to agree.

They made the change last night and burnt Jones' redshirt. Not sure Boulware is an upgrade, but couldn't have been worse than Robertson was last night probably. Getting Chance Hall back will help settle things on the edges, I hope.

Kippy thinks Dobb's can play on Sunday as QB. Says Dobbs has what it takes. Oline is not giving him enough protection.

Same here but just being a realist after what I have seen the first two games. I have seen a lot of our O- linemen get knocked on their azzes several times. Kendrick just got abused one time last night. O- line definitely the weak link for this team.

Yep. I do not like our Oline blocking scheme. We need to get back to the Fulmer way and fire off the ball. Standing on their heels and directing traffic does not work in this league. Like you said, they just get knocked on their arse.

We should go back to the power I with a fullback--Hurd would thrive, except that three or four of our offensive linemen would still be somewhere between mediocre and bad. Our offense is terrible. No slants? No throws to the TE? VT kept our defense off balance with their creative play-calling while the opposing defense is never on its heels playing us because we run maybe five plays and it is obvious what we're doing when the ball is snapped--no misdirection. Our offense basically involves individual talent--Hurd getting yards on his own after lousy blocking; receivers going up and taking the ball from DBs, Dobbs improvising. Maybe that will work against florida and bama--but I doubt it.

If we went to the power I and taught the kids up front how to drive and combo block, and couple that with the play-action (and taught Dobbs how to audible to the pass at the line), we would annihilate the opposition.

This read-option crap is based on the premise that we can't match up to the opposition (so you have to use misdirection and trickery). We have the horses, we just need to use them.

U guys are a joke. They put up 45 and won by 21 points and u want everyone fired. What's wrong with u guys. Richmond has played 2 games in his lifetime and one of that happens to be in from of the largest crowd ever for a football game. He'll be fine he clearly has the abilit. Coleman Thomas played 13 games of great football last year he'll settle down and be fine to.

True, but i think youre missing the main point from everyone. We pretty much got man-handled, and very well could have lost by the same score if VT didnt hurt themselves. All their turnovers and penalties is what enabled the win.

Our OL is absolutely awful. Its been this way since Mahoneys been here. He took Dooleys strength and tore it down the very next yr w the same players. Not sure what the answer is, but im starting to believe that we wont do much w his coaching. This is supposed to be the yr, and maybe it will be. But from the looks of the first two weeks, it might be a 3-4 loss season. FU has got to be licking their chops!

This line is soft. Need Chance Hall back and Jones needs to start. I get Richmond getting beat here and there but even Robertson is getting abused! Only can hope the more games they play together the better they will be. They have to get tough!

Never saw a good O-Line push until Jones and Sanders were lined up together at RG and RT the last 3 minutes

Does Mahoney have a buyout? If so who are good replacements. Hypothetically speaking of course. I know he's not going anywhere, but I want to dream...

If you are speaking of the 3rd down play, that was also part Doobs' fault. He has to be able to see/sense pressure and hit a check-down receiver. Hurd was open to Dobbs left. As a senior QB, he has to be able to read defenses and know where his check-downs are.

When I at game and you see the OLine unable to hold a block for a second. There is no way dobbs has time to even see anyone open. This OLine is real bad. I mean very bad. There getting killed upfront off the start of snap. He has no time at all. I was saying the same thing about dobbs until I actually attended the game. Man it's real bad. This OLine is in despert need of help
