Offensive line coach

I know I'll catch a lot of heat for starting this thread this early in the season, but the truth is the truth. Mahoney isn't the man for the job. We're in year four with talent across the board, and the offensive line isn't where it needs to be. I believe in Butch and I'm happy with most of the staff, but we need to replace Mahoney at the end of the season. Who would of guys like? Les Miles' seat is extremely hot. If he's let go, I would like to see us go after Jeff Grimes.

I can see where some might find this an appropriate topic of discussion. However, to bring it up in week 2 is the worst possible time, unless you are some Ahole rival fan stirring crap. You don't replace assistant coaches during the season, unless they do something really repugnant.

And the fact some fans like you bring it up at this time says alot about why the heady days of Robert Neyland's winning ways have not been duplicated.

I'm flattered that you think I have such an impact on Tennessee football, but you're wrong and your post is absurd. Discussing Tennessee on a Tennessee message board is not the reason we have had little success in recent years. Not even close. Like I said to a different poster, the point of this message board is to discuss our team and give our opinions. I couldn't care less if a rival fan who doesn't have a life is lurking and goes and tells his buddies what he's read.

Mahoney isn't going anywhere until Butch gets fired.

At least you've identified the two weakest links I the staff, Mahoney and Azzani. It's no mistake you mentioned those two IMO.

Also, *run against us.

Aren't these guys the only remaining members of the "best staff in America?"

Common sense and paying attention. It's Butch's offense and the coaches coach it like he wants it coached. Oh and it's infallible. The "Great Infallible Offense".

I know they're not all gone for the same reason, but three of his boys he brought from Cincinnati are gone. I just wouldn't be so certain.

It is very difficult to build an OL in college that runs the pro-set. Thus, the advent of the spread and running QB.

Vs. Appy, the playbook was closed and we had nothing to spread out the D. With the spread in full flower tomorrow, the OL will perform nicely.

Hyams discussed our OL woes this morning. Said our zone blocking scheme is more passive, more finesse. Said we don't fire off the ball with an aggressive mentality but rather kinda try to get in the way of the defensive opponents and hope our RBs find a crease and break tackles. Said he believes this scheme and mindset directly correlates to our struggles with being so bad on short yardage plays last year.

My take away after hearing him is that he thinks it's more scheme and philosophy than an OL coach who's just doing a poor job. Tifwiw.

Smash mouth is tried and true muscle wins games.

Bajakian and Elder left of their own accord and Jancek had nothing to do with the "Great Infallible Offense"

Neither have I. That was more a guess than anything. I thought his contract was only for two years and he's not getting any younger.

He is 60 years old which is not old at all. Last year his offense scored the second most points per game in Vol history.
It is ok to criticize and dislike the scheme, but the scheme is CBJ scheme.

I don't think Mahoney is a very good coach and I think we should've replaced him in 2015.

But I do think our OL talent is overrated by most on here too. Thomas isn't nearly as good as most make him out to be. Robertson was freshman All SCC mostly because not many freshman OL start 13 games in a season like he did. Wiesman and Kendrick have been up and down their whole careers. Richmond looked lost at times last week.

People act like the line we have this year is on par with our 2012 or 2013 OL. It's a lot close to 2010 or 2011, IMO.

Oline thread reminds me of how hard Jalen Hurd has to work for each and every yard he gains

If you don't like seeing people discuss the team and its problems, maybe stay off of message boards. I support Butch, but I don't ignore problems just because I love my team. The point of this board is to discuss what is going on with our team. Good and bad.

I am good with discussing problems and all, but let's give the coaches and the players the benefit of the doubt for the first 2-3 games. Heck let's see what they can do this week and against FL. I DO NOT CARE THAT WE BARELY WON LAST WEEK, the point is we WON. If they suck against FL and we lose then okay come after the coaches, players, S & C. But maybe instead of A&M being our trap game, it was the game before the UBER HYPED BoB that was our trap game this season. If so we won our trap game. I do not think we will overlook A&M. We are 1-0 and soon to be 2-0. Enjoy the weekend my Vol brethren.

I would be happy with Debord being strictly the offensive line coach, but I could see him retiring after this season.

I think Debord would be a pretty solid OL coach/Run Game Coordinator. He's done a really good job scheming run plays for us so far.

But as a play caller, he leaves a LOT to be desired.

What was weird last week was that the experienced interior linemen were the ones being man-handled and our supposed weaknesses at OT actually played very well.

I'm hoping Coleman Thomas ankle injury was a prime cause for the chaos but I don't know when he got hurt.

I see the man every time I'm at a practice. I guarantee it's not him. He's the most energetic coach out there and literally whips their ass. No joke.
