Offensive Line Coach Replacement?

I agree we have the talent. Part of our problem was preseason injuries. Thomas was last minute go against Appy State and has not been really healthy until now. Hall was injured in preseason too.
Hard to do anything when two of your top three linemen are injured.
Most linemen need two years on campus in the S&C program before they see the field. Richmond and Tatum will be good, they just need to get stronger. I know more and more linemen are playing early but it is not normal to win championships with freshman linemen. We are Tennessee, we should have a top notch S&C coach. No excuses if any problems exist.
To the previous point as well, Shoop has gone public with a mention about S&C as well. Could be our staff knew we were in trouble early, hence S&C guy gone, not making a big deal about it so as not to inform our opponents. We may just now be hitting our stride for conditioning by finally playing through it, injuries and all.

SJT this is the thing I keep seeing people say, but if you really look back at the first 3 games, it is not the offense we have been using, they aren't pulling linemen like we did last year,no jet sweeps, no pop passes off the sweep motion, very little misdirection and I don't think I've seen one set with an hback, and then there is no offset I which worked so well in the bowl game, maybe it's just me but I don't see the same offense.

It's not just you. I've been waiting to see some of this all year. I'm still waiting. I've been disappointed in our running game this year.

So it's no surprise that our OL is not meeting expectations. I'm curious to see if there's anything that can be done with the OL coach? Can we find a new one? If so, who should we go for? Or is the OL coach purely at the HC's discretion?

Phil Fulmer.

Peyton Manning as QB coach and Co offensive coordinator with Erik Ainge
Jason Swain WR coach
Phil Fulmer as Oline coach
AL Wilson LB coach

Go back to a pro style offense

Realistic off season
1. New strength and conditioning coach
2. OC coach
3. OL coach

Is about as likely as my taxes going down

We have no say and no insight as to what the problem really is. Give the season a chance to play and then see what the only person with any say does.

HEY

don't be bringing cents into the conversation :hi:

this is 100% the case. this is true for every coaching position

Part of the problem is we run a very complex offensive scheme that requires the O-line to be very active. It feel like a scheme that would work better in the NFL where players have a lot more practice and film time to learn their responsibilities. Most of our offensive break downs haven't been guys getting over powered (excluding Coleman in the first few games with the ankle injuries), it has come from guys not knowing who to block and leaving someone completely unblocked. When you add in the hurry up element of our offense, guys have to run to their spot, hear the play call, process it, then play in a matter of seconds.

Many highschool teams use zone blocking. It does not require a rocket scientist. It will take you about 15 minutes to read an article on it and understand what is going on. We also can't pass block and that is straight up gap/man stuff. Zone blocking and pass blocking require quick feet. Perhaps we are not nimble enough. Foot skills/quickness are in the realm of S&C. Footwork is the position coaches responsibility. Footwork being directional steps taken by the player in executing a block.

I have to agree. Im not a big fan of the "zone blocking scheme is so complex" yada yada yada. If you're Mongo and have the IQ of a kumquat, yea it may be beyond one to absorb. But the average C student in college ought pick it up rather quickly and if a play breaks down just hit somebody in the other teams jersey. Football is a physical collision sport and once you decide the gimmick is more important than the physicality of the game, you become Oregon and fill your trophy case with all the football national championships they've accrued over time.

Peyton's Broncos were all ZBS. I'd say most of the NFL, and a lot of colleges including Bama, OSU, run the ZBS. ZBS is not a gimmick, it's won championships in both college and the pros.

I definitely think it's time for a new OL coach, Mahoney has been here 4 years and never developed the line. Even when he was given the best unit weve had in a long time we took a step backwards. We need a guy who's going to recruit and develop and give us a consistent Offensive line.

I have no idea who any hot OL coaches are. But im sure there are several improvements out there to be had.

With the coaching changes possibly coming at LSU I would reach out to their OL coach they always have a good unit and put players in the league. Idk scheme wise if it fits just an idea

I would love to get Stanford OL Coach to come out here they run a power spread.

Another one, OL coach from Indiana, they run multiple scheme and had some highly drafted players in recent years. If you could pull the OL coach from FSU that would be good too. Those come to mind right now.

He would retire. that is word I've heard

On OL coach, if Mahoney happened to move on you can expect DeBord to take over OL and Sheridan to be elevated to QB coach. Be very surprised if that not direction Butch would go
