I first want to say I have no idea how Heupal will be as a coach. As a fan I hope he leads us to many championships. I am not here to discuss that topic but more along the lines of how to beat the big three. I wanted to just take a quick look at Florida, Alabama, and Georgia's losses over the last few years and see the scoring in those games. Here is what I found:

Alabama
2019
L 46-41 to LSU
L 48-45 to Aub

2018
L 44-16 to Clem

2017
L 26-14 to Aub

2016
L 35-31 to Clem

Georgia
2020
L 41-24 to Ala
L 44-28 to FL

2019
L 20-17 to SC East
L 37-10 to LSU

2018
L 36-16 to LSU
L 35-28 to Ala
L 28-21 to TX

Florida
2020
L 41-38 to TX AM
L 37-34 to LSU
L 52-46 to Ala
L 55-20 to Oka

2019
L 42-28 to LSU
L 24-17 to Ga

2018
L 27-16 to KY
L 36-17 to GA
L 38-17 to Mou

I know these losses are against mostly elite teams but it does give us some great insight into how to beat these powerhouse programs. This appears to be accomplished by being excellent on the offensive side of the ball. Most of the losses these teams suffered was because their opponent scored 30-40 and in some cases 50 points. That tells me that Tennessee is correct in thinking that offense should be a priority in the future. I love that they wanted an offensive minded coach. One other thing to take away is that some of these losses were by double digits, which tells me that the opposing coach never took their foot off the gas even when they got the lead. I hope to days of us hoping a 7-10 point lead is enough to squeak out a win after the first quarter.

Regardless of how this hire works out I am at least glad to see that Tennessee has finally came to this realization. It might take us a few seasons to completely get there (and maybe even a different coach) but I think philosophy wise we are on the right track.

It is now and has always been a symbiotic relationship. The reason "Defense wins championships" still holds true is even if your offence scores every time you touch the ball your defense must prevent the opposing team from scoring every time they touch the ball.

Oh, Lord! No 'track meets' please. Would go over to Tom Black Track if I thought it was some kind of thrill to see athletes go up and down the field.

Where’s Willie Gault when you need him?

4* and 5* players, depth, player development, strong defence that creates TO's and a strong, creative offence. If you think UCF ball is going to beat our top 3 rivals without talent on both sides, you're crazy. That is once every blue moon, boise statue of liberty play.

The biggest hire that will be made on the new staff is DC. You can run a track meet every week if you need too but some times you need to trip the other runner.
