I like offensive minded for the potential excitement.
But i see the merits of a defensive minded coach like Saban. It definitely trickles down to the teams identity.
Fulmer was interesting because he was an offensive minded coach per se, but he was a offensive lineman, and preferred an offense that started with linemen controlling the line of scrimmage, rather than one dominated by skill position players.
So it played out like he was a defensive minded coach. It was a great formula for us back then, and tougness was definitely our identity.
Either way, offensive or defensive minded, you give up a little in order to gain an advantage- ie no offensive coordinator is gonna run a Saban team wide open on offense like Leach does, but they don't need to.
I just think its easier to find a capable defensive coordinator. An offensive guru is harder to find imo, and when you do find one you want to lock him down. A great OC is more likely to be stolen away as a head coach by another school.
Theres lots of good dc's Venables, Steele, Chavis that make careers happily as a loyal dc. Steele had a stint as hc but is back at being a dc, probably to stay.
Plus the NFL has been trending offensively and thats how you get the recruits, by projecting a scheme that mimics or prepares for NFL capability.
