Offense is Not Adjusting Well

It's bowling green dude. If huepel can't play his 2nd string and win easily, it's completely his fault.

You can't yet blame Heupel for the talent on the field. No matter how well he coaches this season, sometimes you just can't fix a lack of talent. Above all else with the offense through one half, the O-line is the biggest problem. There are no holes to run through. They can't protect Milton from 3 pass rushers on Bowling Green. If this continues, I can't imagine what it'll be like against an SEC blitz.

That being said, my biggest concern throughout all this is the playcalling. Throughout the second quarter, with pass protection being as bad as it is, Heupel and Golesh keep calling long-developing passing plays deep. To me, it was dumbfounding to keep watching these calls over and over. If the O-line can't protect, call some screen plays, or some slants. Something that gets the ball out of the QB's hands fast and into the playmakers in open space. Do anything except send your receivers deep and keep Milton waiting in the pocket.

You nailed it friend, it's a talent issue. Guess we'll have to give JH 3+ years to build his own team. We lost a ton of folks to the portal and Milton isn't a Heisman "darkhorse" by a longshot, sorry Fox Broadcasting! Hoping this is just first game jitters?

Y'all really don't like reading the full post, huh? I blamed everything on Heupel and his adjustment making. Of course talent is not the issue when you're playing BG. Y'all just don't like reading past the first sentence.

Milton needs to learn the check downs. Spread the field like they have been and keep the run game involved and take your shots down the field at times. It will come together. It’s the first game people. Team is trying to get chemistry built in a game situation. Not saying we are a 9 win team but I’m overly disappointed.. yet

O-Line can’t protect?

All I see is Milton standing in the pocket, flat footed, with 10 seconds to find a man, and can’t, or won’t.

Can’t lay the blame on the OL.

OL is defintely improved. Well, except for Carvin getting caught holding on consecutive plays. Room for improvement in every position, but nothing unobtainable.

We've taken some shots and they've been there. We just haven't been able to connect... yet.

Well, he finally did with Tillman. And it's not surprising. I am sure these receivers have caught plenty in practice reps. But not so much in game reps. Just a matter of these guys getting in game confidence, developing trust, and a bit more coaching up. I think they will get there.

This was a very weird game. I don't think we can take much from it. BG's entire game plan after the first two drives was to shorten the game because they were scared. Obviously they have about a dozen really quality players and the rest of the roster is duct tape and bailing twine.

They emptied the box to make us choose run over pass every play. We ran the ball 64 times for 326 yards and they still kept it light in the box!!! That is embarrassing as hell, but their coaches are trying to hold a fragile group together and thought that was the best way I guess.

That's why we ONLY won by 32.

I feared Heupel would feel pressure to impress the fans and put too many new wrinkles of the offense on tape, so a slight positive that Pitt really doesn't have much of anything to look at.

Two negatives:

1) BG's adjustment in the second quarter to find some ground in the passing game. But, unlike prior years, we adjusted and took that away. I don't know how many times I've seen the same play that killed us early work just as well against us in the second half again Butch/Pruitt defenses. Could have adjusted a lot quicker though. No need to lose a whole quarter.

2) Dropped balls and overthrows on long balls. QB and receivers out of synch when the play breaks down. I'm sure that will be a focus.
