You can't yet blame Heupel for the talent on the field. No matter how well he coaches this season, sometimes you just can't fix a lack of talent. Above all else with the offense through one half, the O-line is the biggest problem. There are no holes to run through. They can't protect Milton from 3 pass rushers on Bowling Green. If this continues, I can't imagine what it'll be like against an SEC blitz.

That being said, my biggest concern throughout all this is the playcalling. Throughout the second quarter, with pass protection being as bad as it is, Heupel and Golesh keep calling long-developing passing plays deep. To me, it was dumbfounding to keep watching these calls over and over. If the O-line can't protect, call some screen plays, or some slants. Something that gets the ball out of the QB's hands fast and into the playmakers in open space. Do anything except send your receivers deep and keep Milton waiting in the pocket.

It’s pretty simple. It’s Tennessee football. Here we are concerned about our team in the first game of the season against an utter trash opponent. It happens year, after year, after year.

O-Line can’t protect?

All I see is Milton standing in the pocket, flat footed, with 10 seconds to find a man, and can’t, or won’t.

Can’t lay the blame on the OL.

Hard for the offense to adjust when they were barely on the field in the 2nd

Hes got more talent than he’s ever had as a head coach. Not like he inherited an extra talented Oline. Has yet to get Velus Jones involved. Looks to lack innovation and ultimately the QB play has been poor.

Things seemed to have went downhill after Small was taken out. Never underestimate team chemistry.

It’s games like this one that makes it incredibly difficult to continue being a Vol fan. We keep thinking things will change. And they never do.

We clearly have much more talent than Bowling Green.

Get out with this BS. Lack of talent? Are you insinuating that we don’t have the talent to beat BG? So are you saying Minnesota has more talent than Ohio State? Because Minnesota is beating them right now.

Can’t lay the blame on the OL.

Same problem if you're Heupel and Golesh. Make the adjustment to get the ball out of his hands quickly. Don't call plays where he goes through progressions. That's still the bigger issue to me.

We are playing against BGU - the WORST TEAM in CFB! There is NO lack of talent by comparison.

Don't get me wrong, Tennessee is playing terribly. There's more than enough talent to beat BG. All I'm saying is I'm trying to judge the game purely from the coaches' performance and adjustments and not worry about the caliber of player on the field. You want to see if Heupel can make in-game adjustments to what's happening. So far, he can't.

Sure, but again, I'm trying to judge this based on Heupel's performance. As a coaching staff, you have to adapt your gameplan as the game goes on. If you see that your QB is struggling with decision making, get his confidence up by calling dink and dunk screens and slants. They haven't done that so far and Milton is suffering more as a result.

Its all been dink and dunk sans one blown overthrow on a wide open Tillman
