Posting this thread just out of curiosity.
I live just over the mountain in Robbinsville, NC. Just watched our Black Knights whip up on powerhouse Mountain Heritage 26-8 although they are a little down this year. Puts us at 2-1 to start the year off with our only loss coming to the 3x bigger school in the Asheville Cougars who won their 4a conference last year and dethroned AC Reynolds. Lost that game 26-14.
In particular, I was just curious to see how many of you have ever rode over the mountain and watched these Black Knights or how many of you were Maryville/Alcoa followers. I would love to go watch either of those teams play, as they seem to be the REAL deal.

We have a high school sports forum but it doesn’t get a lot of traction so I’ll leave this here to see how many responses you get.

To answer your question I’ve watched Maryville and Alcoa several times over the years. Great rivalry.

Yeah that’s kinda why I posted it over here. You ought to make the drive over the mountain one Friday night into Robbinsville and watch some Smashmouth football. Robbinsville has 15 state championships.

It's a drive for a lot of you, but if you really want to see a great HS game this year, find a way to watch Lipscomb. They play Knox Cath. next week in Nashville.
How do they classify in Tennessee? We only have 1-4 A.

Tennessee has 9……. Yes 9……freaking classifications
utterly stupid.
We used to have 8 classifications up until last year. 1a 1aa 2a 2aa 3a 3aa 4a 4a
That’s weird to have 9.
Typically here in NC, the winner of 1a could also win the State Championship in 1aa in most years. The Smoky Mtn Conference that we play in has tons of State Championships.

I actually traveled to Robinsville last week to watch our daughter cheer. She goes to Brevard. Y’all have a tough team. I was impressed. I also enjoyed all the people I met there. Good folks.

I grew up in Waynesville and played for Tuscola in the early 90’s so I’m familiar with mountain football.

There’s some good ball played around WNC.

Cool!! Our Running Back will probably break the conference rushing record. He’s just a junior. Best work ethic of any high school kid I’ve ever seen.

Does anyone follow south Pitt?
Very similar programs. Robbinsvile and South Pitt.

Shelby vs Alcoa i would love to see.

Richmond Co vs Maryville would be another one.

They play good tough football in Western Cackalack😁

Shelby is 0-3 to start the year this year. Rare down year for the typical powerhouse. Murphy plays South Pitt this year. South Pitt should roll.

Wow! Yeah I haven't been keeping up this year obviously haha. I've never seen that from them.

South Pittsburgh lost to a good Chattanooga Christian that has some really good prospects. But last week South Pitt won 62-0.
They play tough and are well disciplined.

Murphy is really down this year in comparison to most years. I fully expect South Pitt to handle them. But you never know about Murphy.

NC teams don't play TN teams often.
Which is wierd because they're literally right next to each other.

But when they do Carolina teams have good success.

I’ve been fascinated with South Pitt since watching them win a state championship in Nashville running the side saddle single wing. This had to have been in the 80s.
That was about 10-15 years before I was born lol but they do seem to have a good program and stable program.

Well they're both nestled at the Foothills of the Smokey Mountains. Lots of good local restaurants there! Maybe make a day trip to there they play in 2 weeks I think.

Get up early. Enjoy the beautiful mountain drive. If you're to sleep to return, there's affordable sleeping accommodations all over that area.

Yes, lived in Brevard and Asheville when I was a kid but now live in Kernersville.... NC high school football sure has gotten good in the last 10-20 years and I really believe that East Forsyth (4A) is a top 50 school in the country. They really do play scrappy football in WNC, especially the small schools like Robbinsville, Swain County, and Murphy.

Yeah and the thing that makes those 3 schools so good is the fact that they can literally beat anyone. They beat bigger schools all the time. They will knock the snot out of you too. And they run the dang ball down your throat and dare you to stop it. They aren’t scared of anyone.

Yes, that is true.... I remember Brevard being very competitive with longtime small school powerhouse Mt. Airy in the 60's and 70's and most recently with Reidsville. Like I said NC football is really good but I think Western NC (starting at Greensboro) is better than Eastern NC.

Yeah it’s not close.
