Off season preparation

Now that we can reflect on last season I do not think it is unfair to say our team was not prepared to play on game one. We played sloppy and undisciplined and as a result were absolutely humiliated by Georgia State and BYU. Honestly, we did not really start looking like a team until Mississippi State in week 6. I do blame that on coaching. Before you guys label me as a negavol do know I am impressed at the coaching I saw the second half of the season and do feel we have good coaches. My question to Volnation is how do we prevent this from happening again next year? Oklahoma is week 2 and it could get really ugly, really fast if we come out of the gates in a similar fashion. Does anyone know if the coaches learned from last season? Is it fair to expect they will be coaching with more urgency? Is there anything else we can blame the slow start on, like a new scheme or something? I do think we came out after the long break against Indiana pretty strong in the first half and other than the red zone failures they looked ready which is promising. Honestly, as bad as that game was it really was just QB play that killed us IMO and, of course, we still found a way to win.

Anyway, sorry about the rambling post. It always seems Tennessee starts slow, they have done it my whole life. Just once I would like to see us start the season on fire.

To the title of this thread, do the players get a physical when they get on campus for the first time? I was wondering if HB, with his injury , goes through some sort of health evaluation. I know someone will know this answer. Thanks in advance. ( or as some posters say, TIA)

Kind of a ridiculous statement when you look at the roster in year 1... There was no way he could compete with WVA. Georgia State, yes 100%, but still part of me has to sort of think there was a cleansing that still needed to happen in the program - butch players leaving. That is still up to the HC though, and no doubt that loss hurt us in recruiting.

I don't think we will have this issue in 2020, although we won't know until the lights come on in Norman.

Agree with VOLtage, totally unfair to say they lost to WVA because the coaching staff did not get them prepared. New coaches-schemes, no familiarity with players. No one really knew what they were doing and WVA was a much better team. I think everyone is on the same page now and losing because they were not prepared will not happen again.

We don't/can't do anything, it's up to CJP & Co to have the team ready opening day. He hasn't been able to do it in his first two seasons so hopefully he's learned something.

Yeah, they could have competed with WVU, they competed with UK/AU and both had far superior talent than WVU.

Things to work at as a staff:
a. Short yardage red zone run plays
b. effective and timely defensive alignment communication during pre-snap-we looked confused a lot about assignments-was that sideline or on the field
c. after this year-preparing a solid backup QB-I thought Alabama-did a great job moving Jones into the starting roll with the injury to Tua. I really thought we were the least efficient with this area. Now this could also fall on the reliability of our backup QBs.
d. getting better at getting our TE involved in the passing game-staff talks it but doesn't effectively get it done

Simply put, our coaches thought we could play a bunch of kids, especially on defense. When you try to play as many kids as we did (they were subbing 3-4 players each play on the d-line and linebacker), your game plan will be rather simple, which means you're not scheming your opponent. That played right into the hands of Ga. State. Darrell Taylor said as much (State was in formations they weren't prepared for) after the game. That being said, if our QB just plays an average game, we still win, despite being unprepared on defense. JG missed at least 3-4 seam routes for TD's; all he had to do was recognize what he had and throw the damn pass.

Same with the BYU game, if our QB just plays average and doesn't turn it over, we win that one as well. Even though we didn't play well on either side of the ball, we still controlled that game up until the bomb on 3rd and long from inside the 10 yard line with under a minute to play.

Tough lessons are the best lessons; I'll bet a Pruitt UT coached team will never lose to an inferior opponent again. QB play next season will be the difference between a 9-3, 10-2 type of season or a 7-5, 8-4 type of season. If JG beats out HB, then he has improved greatly in Chaney's 2nd year. If not, we'll be playing a true freshmen.

Pruitt told me they learned from their mistakes so everything is OK.

That was much later in the season and the team had gelled much more. The game at WVU would have looked very different had they swapped the KY and WVU games. The defense was overwhelmed by the tempo at West Virginia.

As I said, they were unprepared. Same as this season, unprepared.

If I recall, we had several players playing their first games in college and players playing in new positions they were not accustomed to. It was a learning curve for them as they lined up out of formation, missed blocking assignments, and tried to defend the wrong player on pass plays etc.. I thought JG would start out better considering his experience but maybe having a new OC set him back.
The coaches IMO could have foreseen these issues and have been better prepared but maybe I am wrong. Hopefully players will be more settled in their positions for our first game this coming fall.

we do come out slow. Pushing GA out until November is a change I welcome. Need to push Florida out there too, and move Kentucy and Vandy to September.

Not so sure about moving both. We are still at a talent/depth disadvantage. Schedule would just be back heavy instead of front heavy.
