Off season musing: Short yardage for the spread

I'd say that if there's one position that has gotten more athletic, it's probably D-Tackle. They attack the LOS and are just a lot harder to move than they were 20-30 years ago. You hardly ever see an Offensive Line consistently win by just going straight ahead anymore.
That was the biggest shocker about the national championship to me the way UGA was ripping off big chunks right up the guy with #3 in the 4th quarter. That's when I really feared they would win.

That picture of Herschel looks photoshopped but I know it isn't because I saw it live on television as a lad.

Yeah, we didn't play either a whole lot back then and I didn't hate either then really but my Dad loathed Florida because they stole Dickey and so we were rooting for UGA.
We had 4 season tickets for UT and I got to go to some on the games that dad didn’t take his friends……i.e……crappy games
I grew up going to at least 1 or 2 FSU games a year from 77-88…….so I’ve ALWAYS hated UF.

We need Jamal Lewis. Why does no one ever go over the top anymore? Was it a rule change? or no athletes?

I remember in 99 we gave the ball to Lewis on a toss (not that toss) and he went over the top and basically kicked the Florida guy in the throat as he scored.

Defensive penetration stops short yardage offense regardless of formation. I, wishbone, shotgun, pistol... if there is a defensive tackle in the backfield, it is hard to convert.

I'm not aware of a rule change but I wonder if coaches figured out keeping your feet and driving was a superior strategy to launching and hoping to succeed on the initial push.

Our short yardage success seemed to be better last year. I'd like to get a player in the mold of Debo Samuel and see what happens from out of the Wildcat.

My only concern is that we go too fast for own good sometimes, we would be up 10-17 points get the ball back and if we could implement some offense to shorten the game and get some time of possession in certain times it would be all the offense needs

If you use the shotgun in short yardage you easily double or triple the YTG fo score or move chain. It should only be used when you know you don’t have the man bodies to move the line.

I've always felt like that up until last season. If we have the Hogs up front to make it happen and could have a Peyton Hillis type back carrying the ball it will break a defense's spirit
