She wasn’t killed for shoplifting.

I get that. She had already assaulted him on the way out the door and he felt like his life was in danger. But if the car as in reverse and he felt like he was going to be run over . . . Is firing into the car really that bright a thing to do?

from a Houston paper “she threw it into reverse and tried to run over the deputy”

aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Deputy shoots and kills suspected shoplifter - Houston Chronicle

deadly weapon

How does that add up?

If she's in reverse and the officer is in danger of being run down, that means he is behind the car. it said he was by the door (assuming the passenger side).

Sounds like terrible police work AND reporting.

You're actually doing something good with this thread. Keep going.

I took it to mean that the passenger side door was open and he was in the path of the door if she put it in reverse.

Worst case scenario: he gets knocked on his ass. Definitely not worth risking a child's life

I totally agree with you as far as how his shooting the car was going to somehow save his own life.

He said he was pinned between the car door and the drivers seat while the car was accelerating backward.

My God who risk the kids life in the first place?

Your mom ever ask you "if all your friends jump off a bridge... would you do it too?"

Nobody is saying she was in the right. She was in the wrong. However, the officer killed her and risked shooting a child.

The officer is not justified in his actions. He should no longer be employed in law enforcement. I'm not saying the guy wanted this outcome. I'm saying he can't be trusted to avoid this sort of outcome, and a person like that does not deserve this kind of responsibility.

A harrowing predicament to be sure. But what good does firing into the car do? No matter what he hit, the car was still going to be moving backwards with him pinned against the door. Just awful judgement to A) end up in the situation and B) to try to get out of it that way.
