The big question to be answered on this date is which bigtime SEC school made the best hire.....Auburn or Tennessee. Both hired a once high profile assistant whose stock went down when elevated to head coach (Kiffin in the pro's and Chzick in the college ranks). Futhermore, one school went for a top-notch offensive coordinator (Malzahn) and the other a highly respected, though aged, defensive guru (M. Kiffin). Each trumped the other with recruiting specialists (Orgeron and Taylor).

I am not saying one game necessarily dictates which coach is ultimately sucessful, but at this point both are starting at rock bottom and a win in that game will be huge for the victor.

I really think that if Kiffin would have coached anywhere other than Oakland he would have been a good pro coach.....I think it will work out better for UT in the long run

Agreed Al Davis is nuts. Any coach will need a lot of time to turn that organization around. Jimmy Johnson had a few bad (really bad) years at Dallas. They ended up winning the Super Bowl a couple of times before he left.

I think UT might have a slight advantage. Both UT and Auburn offenses were terrible. I think Kiffin will make better staff hires and have a slight edge in recruiting. In the long run I think this will make Kiffin more successful.

I would happily take Orgeron over TT any day of the week. I don't think it's fair to say Kiffin completely failed at Oakland either. He started with nothing when he came there, and was never truly given a chance to succeed.

I doubt a head to head game will be a true to test to determine which school made the best choice. I agree with other posts, Coach Kif had made the best staff hires so far.

How do you compare the hiring of Gus Malzahn to that of Monte Kiffin.
Kiffin is an innovator and will be thought of as one of the best defensive minds of all time, whereas Malzahn was brought to Arkansas to get his HS talent. His time at Tulsa he had great offenses (number wise) but can that kind of system work in the SEC?

maybe Chizik wouldve been successful if he wasnt at Iowa State which i wasnt even aware was in the Big 12.

Well will just have to see and hope both of us are able to put up a fight with bammer. never thought id see the day i was saying that
