It'd be great to keep Chaney to have some continuity in the offense and team. If not, it would be the 4th offense in 4 years.
Actually...that's one of the things that makes me think Kippy getting the job might make a lot of sense.
As Kippy has really only been a position coach (was assistant HC during Detroit's worst season ever...so I don't know that I'd want to include that in the resume)...so the problem is it's a major, major leap moving from from WR coach to HC...NFL experience or not. There has to be a reason noone made him OC to this point. So, UT would REALLY be stepping out on a limb if they chose him.
However, while he won't make a big splash, he would have the benefit of having a damn good core staff to work with, and maintain continuity on both offense and defense. I would promote L. Thompson to DC (since he got a full year under Monte) and LB coach...and try to bring Rodney Garner in as DL coach Assistant HC and RC.
These dual roles may free up plenty of cash to bring in some heavy hitters (possibly Kippy knows some NFL colleagues that he could bring in) at RB, WR, and ST coaches.
In some respects I think this may make more sense than bringing in someone from the outside like Muschamp.
I would also like to see Chester McGlockton offered a spot as DL coach, if he's healthy enough and interested (he was an intern this year, on the staff).
I think if any HC would be willing to bring in Big Al to coach LB's, Kippy would be the one.
He needs to take an active stance...especially since he's the interim coach.
Check with the current staff members (except Reaves...I'd cut bait with him right now), and make some phone calls to have a proxy staff ready to go, if he gets the nod...and lay it out on the table to Hamilton, saying "Look, here is the staff I'd have, and this is why I believe I'm the right man for the job."
