Second, it's not an anti-UT bias; I obviously hope our wideouts/tight ends do better than the UGA receivers; I just don't expect it. Nor is such an opinion an unusual one. The media has more Georgia wideouts/tight ends on the pre-season all-SEC team than Tennessee's; the coaches have more Georgia wideouts/tight ends on the pre-season all-SEC team than Tennessee's; and other third-party commentators, like Steele, are the same.
Plenty of people, in and out of the fan base, share your skepticism of our team this year. I think the reaction that sjt and others are having to your posts is because of a willingness to give the benefit of the doubt to other programs, but not the Vols.
First, you say UGAs O-line issues are inconsequential, which is ludicrous. That line is less talented and only marginally more experienced than our line was last year.
Next, you seem to think Aaron Murray is better than Tyler Bray. Murray is a wonderful talent and has a bright future, but I don’t think anything suggests he is better or worse than Bray at this point. He got shredded in the bowl game against UCF when he was under pressure (underscoring the O-line problem). He only went over 300 yards once. It was an overtime game against UF and he completed less than 50% of his passes. Bray did it 5 times and was on pace to do it against USCe.
Murray also over-relied on AJ Green, which Mark Richt has said. In 5 games without Green, some against admittedly good teams, Murray completed 53% of his passes for 1100 yards with 8 TDs and 3 INTs. Not remarkably different than Bray.
You also say you would take King/Brown for Hunter/Rogers. I guarantee 90 of 100 UGA fans would make that trade and laugh in your face. In two seasons, Brown has managed 13 receptions for 148 yards and 1 TD. Both Hunter and Rogers eclipsed those numbers as freshman. In fact, Hunter has more TDs for his career than King and Brown do combined in 5 seasons.
Sure – UT still has a talent gap, but it’s not nearly as wide as it has been in the past few seasons. I feel like there are plenty of things to be optimistic about within our program, and I’d rather give the Vols a break than the Dawgs.
