I check out this board often but usually don't post. I've been on here everyday since Saturday and have taken in all the histrionics since. I am convinced the biggest problem with Tennessee football is the fans. There are probably 5-10,000 "fanatics" that drive all this vitriol.
The big majority of people who go to games and support the team let it go after it's over. Everyone wants to win but when we lose, these 5-10,000 act as if thee earth has fallen off its axis. These are the ones who populate these message boards and analyze ad nauseum every utterance or non-utterance of anyone associated with the program from the president of the university to the AD to the head coach to the assistant coaches to the GAs to the 18-21 yr olds who are playing, their friends, acquaintances, relatives, teachers, neighbors, and anyone who ever saw them out in a store or bar or doctors office or anywhere. Social media stalkers monitor every facebook post or tweet and immediately get on here to report the"major breakng news" or rumor or crazyspeculation to all the rest of us.
The scrutiny and pressure we place on these kids is unfathomable. The misguided pedestal they are placed on gives them a skewed sense of self-importance after years of adulation. It's no wonder many of them are self-absorbed and not good team players..
You look on here and we are already stalking our next victims by the time they are in the 10th grade if they show any potential to be our next 5-star. These fans apparently find it informative.or self-serving in some capacity that in 2-3over years they have found the time and felt the need to regale us with their opinions and observations 20,000, 30,000, 40,000, or even 50,000 times.
My point in this rant is I guess to get some of us to look at how much importance we are attaching to something that should just be a pleasant diversion. Let these kids be themselves and have fun without the sorry of death threats if they throw too many interceptions, or something akin to worthless if they can't get their kickoffs in the endzone, or if they don't fall forward for two more yards after initial contact.
Every one of these players are busting their tails every day to play for UT. We ignore all the hours of workouts, weights, running, and practice they give and we call them terrible because they dropped a pass. Many on here rake them continually because they dropped don't live up to their hype or our standards. In fact, to hear many on here you would assume they could go out there and play much better. Same goes for the coaches. Seems like 80% of posters act like they could walk over to the athletic complex and do a better job. No matter what the talent or maturity level of the team is we should be able to compete with anyone just by virtue of coaching.
I just hope some people on here would take a look at some of the things they are posting and decide does this really need yo be said. Would you appreciate it being said about you own son or daughter or about yourself

Unless you have something completely untrue and fabricated to say, or at least can't even summon the creativity to make up a decent coaching change/locker room drama rumor, you have no business posting on this board... come back when you hear something from somebody who heard something from somebody and try again. Until then, Thread = fail

Great thread/post and spot on.

There's degrees of this on every board, but this one is easily the worst of all when it comes to armchair QBs and couch coaches. The vitriol here is awful too. It's just indicative of the average age of this forum's members and the overall lack of perspective of the East Tennessee redneck :)

I think you're right about one thing- we've got a problem with this fanbase.

How many of made it to games this year? Did you stay all the way through? I hope so. I hope a lot of us who are passionate enough to hang out on a forum for a team that isn't going bowling care enough to stay all the way through. A lot of people didn't.

Fans of a program need to attend games and stick them out. Fans of this program need to cheer and yell and scream on every down on defense, do you see us doing that?

It starts at the top. I went to the Arkansas game this year and the Pride didn't. How can you fire up this fanbase without yelling rocky top obnoxiously at the top of your lungs? Then it extends to the coach. The Orange pants are nice, but it isn't enough. You need to get involved with the students like Pearl did. Pearl was able to light up weaker talent with his energy alone, Dooley needs to produce much much more of that.

Finally, on us. We need to get mad when we see this happen and expect better things. Anyone who thinks that a losing season is ever acceptable at UT under any scenario needs to take a good look at their pride for the program.

There's a problem with these types of statements(in bold). There are some really good fans that don't attend games because they can't afford them. Someone going to every game isn't a better fan than someone that doesn't go to the games for economic reasons. Being at the game doesn't make one a better fan. It's more about loyalty and perspective. It's about going/watching/listening ALL THE TIME. It's about listening to a UT basketball game when they're 5-14. It's about watching the coach's show the day after a 10-7 loss to UK. It's about watching the last 3 minutes of the 4th quarter in a 38-6 defeat. It's about sitting in a pouring down rain while beating the daylights out of Memphis State. It's about spending your last 5 dollars on gas to drive to Nashville just to tailgate and then watch/listen to it in the parking lot because you couldn't afford a ticket.

I am certainly on the fringe as I love smelling my own farts. Over a course of several weeks I will fart in the same spot on a little pillow I have (naked). And then when I feel the time is right, I cut out that little square and chew on it. It's very earthy and gives me an odd buzz that's hard to describe. Try it and you'll see.

Oh, and GBO!

Yes, there are a gaggle of fans who need to get a life.

However, the biggest problem with Tennessee football is not winning games.

Winning always helps but not always possible. We should just try to contain ourselves a little when things aren't great. It will turn around in time.

I agree. I send my son and most of my money to Knoxville and there far too many of the negavols on this site.

If being a fan makes you miserable, why bother?

GBO!

This is, of course, completely fair. I agree with you 100%. Well, about the sports you're interested in. If you aren't really a basketball fan you don't need to watch every game, etc. I'm just saying there's some lethargy in this fanbase.

I agree with the OP, and most of what's been said in support.

I want to say I don't like all of the decisions the coaches make, or all the plays the players make, but I support DD and team 100% as long as he is the coach of UT. The situation is what it is, and no amount of whining and crying I do, or anyone else does, is going to fix it.

One more thing, If the "fans" here on VN dislike DD and so much of what's going on, please leave and find another team to "support" instead of infecting the rest of the population with your negative crap.

You lost most of those on this board with "histrionics" and "vitriol". Try "been readin' a lot of this stuff" and "we need to stop spewing this hate and dissin' folks".

So true. The OP, who I agree with, was unable to get his point across to those who needed it the most due to a refined vocabulary.

One of the things that makes great programs great is the fans expecting great things from the program. If all the fans just sat back and said it's cool if we lose, we might be good eventually, then the administration has no incentive to make the program the best it can be.
